Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates in style
The parking lot at American Legion Post 156 was overflowing and the event hall was packed with excited guests and artists Saturday evening for the Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra’s 40th Anniversary Celebration Concert. Among the guests for the extravaganza were Waltham Mayor Jeannette A. McCarthy and Councilors Paul S. Katz, Randall J. LeBlanc and Kathy McMenimen.
The evening kicked off with a feast of delicious dishes from local eateries, supported by drinks from the Legion’s bar. Karen Walz, vice president of the WPO board of directors, welcomed everyone to the concert and introduced the orchestra and musical director Michael Korn for the musical program.
The program itself was as ambitious as it was joyous, featuring uplifting works from Aaron Copeland, Léo Delibes and three different Strauss brothers (Johann, Josef and Eduard).
Orchestral works were interspersed with opera and operetta pieces voiced by soloists Mara Bonde (soprano), Sandra Piques Eddy (mezzo) and WPO board member Craig Tata (baritone).
Highlights of the evening included a mesmerizing rendition by Bonde and Eddy of Delibes’ “Flower Duet” from the opera “Lakmé” and a hilarious trio from Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” featuring all three soloists that elicited a raucous standing ovation from the audience.
The intimate nature of the venue made for an immersive and interactive experience. Early in the program Korn handed over his conductor’s baton — following a spirited auction for the privilege — to guest conductor Cody Caballero as Korn pranced around the tables, delightedly cracking the whip with his slapstick to Josef Strauss’ “Jockey Polka” while Cody kept the orchestra in line.
During the intermission, Mayor McCarthy presented David Salstein, WPO board president and pianist, with an official city proclamation recognizing the orchestra’s milestone 40th season.
Judging by the joyful smiles on the faces of audience and artists alike, there will be many more anniversaries to celebrate.
