Water main break causes backups

A water main break on Prospect Street near Nova Biomedical resulted in major traffic delays in the area and surrounding roadways Wednesday morning.

“It’s pandemonium on the roads, stay home,” Stephen Bennett wrote in a post in the Waltham, MA Residents Facebook group.

Reports of traffic problems and news of work in the area popped up on social media as early as 7 a.m.

According to a Facebook post from the Waltham Police Department, a portion of Prospect Street from Sun Street to the entrance to Mount Feake Cemetery was closed so that the Engineering Department’s Water and Sewer Division could repair the damaged pipe.

Members of the Facebook group reported traffic on Moody, Crescent and Sun streets.

Maria Hanelin, another group member, wrote that traffic was gridlocked in the immediate area, turning what was typically a 10-minute trip to the bank into a 35-minute journey.

According to a comment by Matthew Carter, the Water and Sewer Division removed a damaged portion of a pipe.

Patrick Deveau, another group member, commented that the road was reopened to traffic at around 7 p.m. Wednesday.
