James Mooney, 1927–2025, retired Waltham Police officer

James R. Mooney, of Waltham, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 16 2025, surrounded by his loving family at the John Scott House in Braintree. He was 98 years old.
Born on Jul. 25 1927 in Waltham, Jim was the son of the late Robert J. Mooney and Emelia (Delorey) Mooney. He was educated in Waltham schools before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly and honorably served during World War II.
Upon returning home, Jim was appointed to the City of Waltham Police Department as a Patrolman on Dec. 13 1954. He served the citizens of Waltham with dedication and integrity for more than 32 years before retiring on Mar. 19 1986.
Jim was a people person who loved socializing with friends and family. He enjoyed dancing at every opportunity, and his love of fitness and exercise allowed him to stay quite active well into his 90s.
Jim was famous for his playful sense of humor and love of practical jokes, which kept his grandchildren—and just about everyone else—laughing. He left behind a lifetime of funny stories, and anyone who knew him has one to share.
Above all, Jim’s greatest joy was his family. Nothing mattered more to him than his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sheila Ann (Murphy) Mooney.
Jim is survived by his devoted children: Kathleen A. Smith (late Stephen M. Smith) of Greenville, SC; Michael J. Mooney (Mary Ellen) of Supply, NC; Patricia J. Smith (Richard) of Milton; David R. Mooney (Mary) of Southport, NC; Mary M. Mooney (Paula Chamberlin) of Charlestown; Sheila M. D’Alleva (David) of Newton; and James T. Mooney (Tracy) of Grantham, NH. He also leaves 19 cherished grandchildren, 15 adoring great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was the dear brother to the late Robert Mooney, Paul Mooney, William Mooney, Mary Smyth, and Thomas Mooney.
Jim will be remembered for his service to his country and city, his love of conversation, and most of all, his deep devotion to his family.
Those who wish to pay their respects to Jim and his family can do so in the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street, Waltham on Monday Oct. 6 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. Parking attendants will be on duty.
Family and friends are welcome to celebrate Jim’s life and remember the love and friendship he shared with so many at a funeral service in the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street, Waltham on Monday Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. Burial with Waltham Police and U.S. Navy Military Honors will follow at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham.
