Margaret Donnelly, a 32-year veteran of the Waltham School Committee, resigned from her position on Monday, leaving a committee seat vacant.

Donnelly was first elected to the position in 1994 and was re-elected to the committee in 2023.

She has not been present at committee meetings in recent months and did not respond to requests for comment.

The clerk’s office announced on Jan. 14 that the School Committee and City Council will hold a special meeting, under the provision of Mayor Jeannette A. McCarthy, to fill the seat until Jan. 2, 2028.

According to School Committee member Sabrina DeJoannis, any of the current City Council and School Committee members can nominate a candidate to fill the vacancy.

The meeting is scheduled to be held at the City Council Chamber at 610 Main St. on Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
