Brandeis student arrested for trespassing and drug charges following alleged kidnapping
Bryan Kim, 21, of Hoboken, New Jersey, pleaded not guilty on March 6 to charges of trespassing and possession of a class B drug.
Kim had been charged with assault and battery on a family member or household member as well as kidnapping in connection with a March 3 incident involving his girlfriend. Those charges have since been dropped due to a 24D plea put forward by Kim. A 24D plea allows probation and a controlled substance education program in lieu of jail time for substance-related offenses. Kim is suspended indefinitely from Brandeis University and was issued a no-trespass order for the campus according to a police report from Brandeis University Police.
On March 5 at 9:44 p.m., an anonymous caller informed Brandeis University police that Kim was staying in a friend’s dorm room on campus. According to the police report, officers found Kim under a blanket on a couch that had a wooden dresser placed in front of it. Kim began to cry and hyperventilate, saying that he wasn’t receiving any sympathy and that he’s an international student with nowhere to go. After consoling Kim, police took him into custody.
While conducting a search of Kim’s backpack, police reportedly found a bag of suspected lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, better known as the federally controlled Schedule II stimulant Vyvanse. The police report states that Kim said he used the pills to help with studying, but that they were not prescribed to him. Police said they found Kim’s girlfriend’s passport in the backpack as well.
Police arrested Kim and charged him with trespassing and possession of a Class B drug. Kim pleaded guilty to both of these charges on March 6.
Judge Ellen M. Caulo released Kim on personal recognizance after posting bail. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts appealed to change that decision, but the appeal was denied. A pretrial hearing for Kim will be held on April 8.
