Public safety report: Kids cause concern, calls from residents
Three unrelated incidents involving juveniles garnered Waltham police attention last week.
On March 19 at 8:52 p.m., police were called to 200 Trapelo Road. On-site security reported that a group of kids had jumped over the fence onto the property. Police could not locate the group. The city plans to implement security improvements within the coming months intended to reduce the number of trespassing incidents and hold trespassers accountable, according to Parks-Recreation Board chairperson Jerry Walker. The city wants to keep the details of the improvements from the public to ensure security, he added.
On March 20 at 6:54 p.m., police responded to the commuter rail tracks adjacent to Parsons Avenue. A caller reported seeing a group of kids playing on the train tracks. Police could not locate the group.
On March 22 at 4:01 p.m., police responded to an abandoned house at 59 Farnum Road. A caller stated that there was a group of children attempting to enter the house. Police were able to locate the group. Both the children and the parents were spoken to about the incident, and no charges were filed.
A summary of additional police activity from March 19 to March 22 is as follows:
On March 19 at 1:06 p.m., police responded to reports of a sick raccoon at Waltham Fields Community Farm. The raccoon left the area before police arrived on scene.
On March 19 at 7:41 p.m., police responded to the area of 99 Moody St. A caller reported seeing a suspicious woman who was possibly homeless. Officers spoke to the woman and discovered she was just waiting for the commuter rail.
On March 20 at 12:46 p.m., police responded to reports of a drone flying overhead at the Walgreens Drug Store on Weston Street. Officers searched but were unable to locate the drone.
On March 20 at 4:55 p.m., police responded to the area of 675 Main St. Upon arrival, officers discovered a man who had taken it upon himself to direct traffic. The man will be summonsed to court for disorderly conduct.
On March 20 at 8:20 p.m., police responded to reports of a package theft from a residence on Central Street. After investigation, police were able to identify a suspect who received a summons for the incident.
On March 21 at 1:54 a.m., police responded to the overnight shelter at 20 Felton St. Upon arrival, police were able to identify a suspect who was attempting to break into the shelter. The suspect received a summons for breaking and entering.
On March 21 at 10:03 a.m., police responded to the intersection of Old Lexington Road and Trapelo Road. A vehicle had made contact with a speed radar sign. One person was transported from the scene to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
On March 21 at 10:18 a.m., police responded to reports of an idling vehicle at Planet Fitness on Clematis Avenue. Police spoke to the person inside the vehicle, who was taking a nap before going to the gym.
On March 22 at 1:31 a.m., police responded to reports of a break-in at Hannaford’s Supermarket. A drunk man was trying to gain entry to the store. Police placed him into protective custody.
On March 22 at 1:57 p.m., police responded to the area of 100 Beaver St. A vehicle was travelling illegally on the Rail Trail and in the process had struck a guardrail. The operator of the vehicle received a citation for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and illegal operation of a motor vehicle.
