Brandeis Wind Ensemble

November 17 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free
Registration is requested here. Doors open at 6:45 pm.

The Brandeis Wind Ensemble will celebrate Gustav Holst’s 150th birthday with a performance of his Moorside Suite. Written in 1928, six years before he died, the work is a mature culmination of his folk song influenced style.

Alfred Reed’s Fifth Suite for Band is a collection in four movements of original melodies with an international flair: The American “Hoedown,” French “Sarabande,” Japanese “Yamabushi Kagura,” and a spirited Israeli “Hora.”

Aakash Mittal’s Salt March is a tribute to Mohandas K. Gandhi’s historical protest and the music of that moment. In the spring of 1930, Gandhi began a non-violent protest of British colonialism that challenged unjust laws that gave Britain a monopoly on salt production. Omar Thomas’ arrangement of the folk song Shenandoah is at times mysterious, somewhat ominous, constantly introspective, and deeply soulful.

Thomas Souza, conductor.
