About Us
The Waltham Times’ mission is to be Waltham’s go-to source for high-quality, unbiased, community-focused journalism. The Waltham Times reports, investigates, entertains, inspires, and encourages debate about the topics that matter to our city, to foster an informed and engaged Waltham. We are a proud member of the Institute for Nonprofit News.
Our guiding principles
- The Waltham Times will deliver objective, nonpartisan news coverage.
- We will adhere to the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics as well as the guidelines for 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations.
- We will cover all of Waltham’s richly diverse communities, reflecting all parts of our city in order to serve the whole.
Our story so far
An all-volunteer Waltham News Alliance startup team established the organization in 2024. We work with freelance professional journalists and plan to hire essential staff as required to run a sustainable publication. As a non-profit community organization, volunteers will continue to play an important role in our operations, governance and journalism, and we will solicit input from the community to ensure that we are representing the public fairly.
The Waltham Times shines a spotlight on city government, schools, housing issues, commercial development, traffic, public safety, elections, and local events. We publish features about Waltham’s history, personalities, businesses, arts and culture – stories about what makes us a vibrant and wonderful community. We respect and celebrate the diversity of Waltham and will strive to cover all the many groups within our city. In time, we plan to publish signed opinion pieces and letters to the editor.
The Times launched as a digital publication in Oct. 2024 with weekly newsletters and a website. We now deliver an e-newsletter three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We aspire to publish a print edition (weekly, biweekly or monthly), too, for those who can’t or don’t want to access the news digitally. The print edition will depend on our ability to generate advertising sales revenue to cover the cost.
Community-supported news
The Waltham Times will not have a paywall or charge for access, as we believe everyone should be able to freely access the news. Instead, we support our operations through donations, memberships, grants, advertising, sponsorships, and fees for posting notices. We can only exist if Waltham residents and businesses agree that our community needs a source of independent, non-partisan news.
Because we won’t be requiring a subscription like commercial newspapers do, we must rely on the financial support of community members who believe in the value of local news and its importance in building and maintaining a healthy, thriving city.
We invite and encourage Waltham residents, businesses, public officials, institutions and organizations to join with us to build a thriving, connected community!
