The Brandeis Journalism Program presents Who Owns the News?, an event featuring four former Washington Post leaders as they discuss one of the most urgent questions in journalism today: what happens when billionaire owners reshape the newsroom?
These veteran editors and journalists experienced firsthand the sweeping changes at one of America’s most storied newspapers, from mass layoffs to shifts in editorial direction. Together, they’ll explore what billionaire ownership means for journalism’s independence, credibility, and future.
Kevin Merida, former top editor of The Los Angeles Times, former managing editor of The Washington Post, and founding editor of ESPN’s The Undefeated, joins Marty Baron, former top editor of The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and the Miami Herald; Janice Page, former arts editor at The Washington Post, The LA Times, and The Boston Globe; and Kainaz Amaria, former senior editor for visuals, investigations at The Washington Post, NPR, and Vox. This discussion examines the growing influence of billionaire owners on American newsrooms and what it means for the future of the free press.
