SUMMARY:Sultana performs at Gore Place
DESCRIPTION:The musical duo Sultana will perform “History and Legends through Song” at the Gore Place Carriage House. The program of songs and history visits fascinating historical or legendary characters and events\, from ancient Mesopotamia and Medieval Europe to the Old West and into more modern times. Subjects include the first known author\, a character from Arthurian legend\, an epic medieval battle\, the first museum\, a renowned radio broadcast\, and more. “History and Legends through Song” is part of the  “Live Music Making History Live” series. \nSultana is Jon and Li Waterman. Songwriters and musicians\, they have performed their music and history programs in venues throughout New England as part of “Live Music Making History Live.” The series was designed to encourage the celebration and exploration of history through music. The program is supported in part by a grant from the Waltham Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. \nThe entire admission charge will support the Gore Place Museum. $21 for non-members\, $19 for members\, and $5 card to culture.

SUMMARY:Life of a laborer\, a working-class history tour
DESCRIPTION:From cooking meals to operating a factory loom\, laborers made the Lyman family’s life on a grand estate possible. \nHundreds of workers were employed in occupations like gardeners\, maids\, and farm hands during the Lyman Estate’s 150+ years of operation. Thousands more held positions in industries that helped the family prosper financially\, like the textile mills in Waltham and Holyoke that the Lymans invested in. Explore the working-class history of the Lyman Estate and visit areas of the house not usually on view during this new specialty tour. \nMember $15; Nonmember $20. \nPlease call 617-994-5912 for more information. \nThis tour will also be offered on August 16\, September 20\, October 18 and November 15. \nAccessibility considerations: Tour involves four floors of stairs. There is a ramp for access to the first floor but the estate has not been equipped with ramps\, elevators\, or chair lifts to reach the other floors. Visitors are welcome to sit on the reproduction furniture in the house and service animals are welcome. We are happy to work with you to make your visit an enjoyable one and we encourage visitors with questions or requests to call ahead. \n

SUMMARY:Workshop: Weaving on a loom
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our carriage house for an extended three-hour traditional skills workshop and try your hand at weaving on a loom! Each participant will create 4 woven coasters (aka “mug rugs”). All supplies will be provided. \nWeaving expert Beth Guertin of A Place to Weave will guide you in how to use a four-shaft loom to weave at least 32 inches of the warp in multiple twill patterns and a plain weave. After the workshop\, Beth will bring the weaving home to do the final felting and cutting process\, then return the mug rugs to Gore Place the following Saturday to be picked up at your convenience. \nWe hope you will join us for this unique experience!
