SUMMARY:'Hold Onto Me' East Coast premiere
DESCRIPTION:It’s summer\, and 11-year-old Iris is running wild through the streets with her older friend Danae when she learns her estranged father\, Aris (“Dogtooth” star Christos Passalis)\, is back in town for his own father’s funeral. Determined to know him\, Iris tracks him down to a dilapidated shipyard\, where he’s been keeping to himself. What begins as a stubborn attempt to reconnect slowly unfolds into a fragile bond. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. \n“Hold Onto Me” will screen as part of Belmont World Film’s 24th International Film Series\, “Thicker than water\,” exploring the ties that bind—and sometimes limit us—through an intimate and far-reaching collection of stories about families in all their complexity. Across cultures and continents\, these films ask what we inherit\, what we carry\, and what we owe one another. \nThe series unfolds over eight consecutive Mondays at the West Newton Cinema. After a two-week break\, the series returns in June with three additional remarkable films in recognition of World Refugee Awareness Month and Pride Month. \nFor complete details on the films in this series\, visit our web site. \n

SUMMARY:Virtual tour of Yinka Shonibare’s 'Sanctuary City'
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rose Art Museum for a virtual exploration of “Yinka Shonibare: Sanctuary\,” the U.S. debut of the British-Nigerian artist’s powerful and immersive installation “Sanctuary City” (2024). The installation consists of eighteen scaled-down replicas of historical and contemporary buildings from across the globe that have served as places of refuge for persecuted and vulnerable groups and individuals. Dr. Gannit Ankori\, Rose Director and Chief Curator\, in conversation with Pauline Forlenza\, Director and CEO of the American Federation of Arts\, will offer detailed analyses of the installation and explore its symbolic components. Ankori and Forlenza will also discuss how the artwork challenges us to confront our responsibilities to one another and to recognize every person’s basic need for shelter and a safe haven. While pointing to global history\, Shonibare’s installation makes an urgent call for action today and into the future. \nThis free virtual tour requires registration. The physical installation will remain on display at the Rose through January 3\, 2027. The Rose Art Museum is open Wednesday–Sunday; 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Admission is free\, but a ticketed reservation is recommended to guarantee entry.

SUMMARY:Film screening of 'Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack'
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rose Art Museum for a special screening of the acclaimed 2019 documentary “Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack\,” an intimate and illuminating portrait of one of the most dynamic and uncompromising artists of the 20th century. The film offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from Flack as she reflects on her groundbreaking career\, her fierce independence\, and her role in shaping Photorealist painting on her own terms. \nBefore the screening\, guests are encouraged to take part in a docent-led tour of “Photorealism in Focus\,” which features two of Flack’s striking paintings: “Family Portrait (Farb Family Portrait)” (1969–1970) and “Shiva Blue” (1972–1973). The exhibition brings together pioneering and contemporary artists who explore the relationship between painting and photography\, inviting us to reconsider realism\, perception\, and the stories artists choose to tell. The tour offers valuable context for the film and a deeper understanding of Flack’s bold vision within the movement. \n2:30 p.m. — Docent tour of “Photorealism in Focus.” Rose Art Museum.\n4:00 p.m. — Film screening. SUMMARY:'The Condor Daughter' East Coast premiere
DESCRIPTION:In “The Condor Daughter” a young woman lives in the community of Totorani\, high in the Bolivian Andes. Her adoptive mother has dutifully taught her the ancient ways of midwifery\, including the tender Quechua songs that are believed to help safely usher newborns into the world. But while she loves\, respects\, and is expected to continue this tradition\, she dreams of discovering the wider world on her own and longs to become a folkloric music star in the city. \nSpeaker: Susan Kalt\, an award-winning linguistic researcher and language educator\, focusing on the Quechua and Spanish languages. \n“The Condor Daughter” will screen as part of Belmont World Film’s 24th International Film Series\, “Thicker than water\,” exploring the ties that bind—and sometimes limit us—through an intimate and far-reaching collection of stories about families in all their complexity.

SUMMARY:The Gore Roll: A talk with Brenton Simons
DESCRIPTION:The Gore Roll of Arms\, the earliest known collection of heraldic arms in America\, was the work of Christopher Gore’s father\, John Gore (1718-1796). John Gore ran a paint shop in Boston and did fine decorative painting on coaches for the elite of Boston. The Gore Roll includes pen\, ink\, and watercolor arms for New England’s most prominent families\, including the Winthrops\, Saltonstalls\, Brattles\, and Winslows. Studied by many\, a copy was created by Isaac Child in 1847. The original remained in the possession of the Gore family until it was lost in 1865. Boston physician and heraldic scholar Dr. Harold Bowditch helped to secure and donate the original to the New England Historic Genealogical Society. This new publication brings together for the first time facsimiles of the original Gore Roll as well as the 1847 Child and 1926 Harold Bowditch copies. The publication is enriched by scholarly commentary\, including an introduction by D. Brenton Simons\, OBE. \nBrenton Simons is President Emeritus and Chief Stewardship Officer of the New England Historic Genealogical Society (AmericanAncestors.org). He is an author\, historian\, and genealogist. In this illustrated talk\, Brenton will tell the story of John Gore’s remarkable book\, its disappearance\, and rediscovery.

SUMMARY:More than Money: The world of coin collecting
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we continue our Social Series with “More than Money: The world of coin collecting” with Neil Musante\, a collector and numismatic researcher and author of two books that have become standard references on the subject\, with a third coming soon. \nThis talk will explore various aspects of collecting\, including some of the history leading to the coins of the present day. We will also discuss what makes some of them worth so much money and why two coins of the same denomination\, with the same date and mintmark\, can be so different in value from each other. It is essential to understand how coins are graded and how grade determines value. Most importantly\, there will be plenty of time for questions. \nSeats are limited. Sign up by calling 781-893-9020 or emailing with your name\, phone number\, and the number of participants. \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Waltham Cultural Council\, a local agency funded by Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.
