SUMMARY:Journalism in Jeopardy: a panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:The free press has been considered a revered cornerstone of American liberty since the founding of our country. Yet\, today’s news media has seemingly been under attack—certainly\, many recent events have seen government wielding unprecedented control over media sources\, all while the entire field of professional journalism has undergone tremendous upheaval and transformation in the wake of the digital revolution. \nWe will examine this unfolding crisis in a meaningful\, intelligent panel discussion. How does the burden of socio-political polarization impinge on journalistic integrity? Are there solutions to the problems the media faces? The panelists will explore these questions and more: \nPanelists Include: \n\nJoan Donovan – Professor at BU\, co-author of “Meme Wars: The Untold Story of the Online Battles Upending Democracy in America\,” data whistleblower\nDan Kennedy – Professor at Northeastern University\, co-author of “What Works in Community News\,” media commentator\nJune Kinoshita – President / co-founder of the Waltham Times\n\nParking available around the building and at the Central Square Parking Deck\, off of Lexington Street. \nThis event is brought to you by the Waltham Democratic City Committee (WDCC). It is part of the WDCC’s ongoing panel discussion series. Informed voters make for better voters\, and better public policy. \nImportant note: the views of the panelists and the host organizations are all independent and do not reflect upon one another. This event is a free exchange of ideas\, and participants were invited on the premise that they would bring those ideas in an unhindered and uninhibited environment. We ask audience to be respectful and open-minded.

SUMMARY:Mill Talk: Why are workers' stories missing at historic sites?
DESCRIPTION:The labor movement in the United States is a bulwark of democracy and a driving force for social and economic equality. Yet its stories remain largely unknown to Americans. Robert Forrant and Mary Anne Trasciatti edited a collection of essays focused on nationwide efforts to propel the history of labor and working people into mainstream narratives of US history. The book\, “Where Are the Workers?” shows how working-class perspectives can expand our historical memory and inform and inspire contemporary activism. The talk will explore lessons learned from nationwide efforts to promote our understanding of labor and working-class history. \nMill Talks at the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation are free and open to the public and are made possible by the generous support of the Lowell Institute. \nFree to the pubic\, but registration required.
