SUMMARY:'Elaborate Procedures' — An evening of films and poems by Derek Jenkins & Eugenia Zuroski
DESCRIPTION:AgX is pleased to present “Elaborate Procedures\,” an evening of films and poems by Hamilton\, Ontario-based artists Derek Jenkins and Eugenia Zuroski. \nThrough simple procedures – observing\, writing\, filming – both artists open up unexpected ways of relating to the world. Rather than treating the camera as a tool for documentation\, Jenkins approaches filmmaking as a relational practice\, using flowers\, landscapes\, and shared acts of image-making to foster connections between people. Zuroski’s poems likewise begin with close observation\, weaving the natural world and everyday life into incisive reflections on language\, history\, and the systemic structures that shape our experience. Together\, their works create a thoughtful dialogue on how we inhabit\, perceive\, and remember the world around us. \nThe screening will be followed by an in-person conversation with Jenkins and Zuroski. Programmed and moderated by AgX member Lilan Yang. \nThis screening is free with a suggested donation of $5 – $20.

SUMMARY:Blue Collar 101: Commercial fishing and the maritime trades
DESCRIPTION:What actually happens to keep our coastal waters\, working waterfronts\, and marine supply chains running every single day? Who navigates the commercial fishing vessels\, maintains our complex marine infrastructure\, builds our heavy waterfront structures\, and trains the next generation of maritime leaders? \n\n\nFor the fourth session of Blue Collar 101\, we’re bringing together workers and industry experts from across the Commonwealth’s commercial fishing and maritime sector. Representatives from the commercial fishing industry\, maritime higher education\, marine trade associations\, and heavy marine construction will walk us through what the job actually looks like: the operational mechanics\, the rigorous safety protocols\, the seasonal demands\, and the career pathways into this vital ocean workforce. \nThis is a panel conversation for the general public and those curious about the skilled labor that keeps our coastal infrastructure functioning. \nFree and open to the public but registration is recommended. Doors open at 6:30.

SUMMARY:Did 9/11 make today’s Middle East?
DESCRIPTION:The attacks on the United States set in motion policies and wars on Afghanistan and Iraq that profoundly reshaped the region\, and America’s relationship to it. Today\, as the U.S. remains embroiled in a war with Iran that has entangled much of the Middle East\, events of the past quarter-century seem more consequential than ever. \nIn the first Crown Center event dedicated to examining the long term consequences of 9/11 for the US and the region\, experts on Afghanistan\, Iran\, Iraq\, and U.S. foreign policy will ask: Did 9/11 make today’s Middle East? And how? \nNaghmeh Sohrabi\, the Charles (Corky) Goodman Professor of Middle East History and the director for research at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis\, will moderate\, and Gary Samore\, Crown Family Director and professor of the practice of politics at Brandeis University\, will deliver opening remarks. \nPanelists: \n\n\nSina Azodi is an assistant professor of Middle East Politics\, and the director of Middle East Studies Program at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. \n\n\n\n\nOsamah F. Khalil is a professor of history and chair of the International Relations Undergraduate Program at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. \n\n\n\n\nShamiran Mako is an associate professor of international relations and political science at the Pardee School of Global Studies and a faculty leave fellow with the Crown Center. \n\n\n\n\nMejgan Massoumi is an assistant professor of history at Carnegie Mellon University. \n\n\nRapaporte Treasure Hall and online. SUMMARY:Mill Talk: The Hidden History of Suits
DESCRIPTION:The classic men’s dark tailored suit and crisp white shirt may look plain\, but they are actually triumphs of 19th-century engineering. In this talk\, dress historian Chloe Chapin takes us “behind the seams” to explore the mechanical\, technological\, and chemical innovations that made suits possible. \nFrom the river-powered machines of New England’s textile mills to the caustic\, labor-intensive chemistry of early bleacheries\, we will uncover the hidden industrial technologies required to produce the simple uniform that clothed the nation. \nDrawing from her 2026 book\, “Suitable: The Sartorial Revolution and the Fashioning of Modern Men\,” Chapin reveals how the Industrial Revolution fashioned modern men. \nFree to the public\, but registration required. This event has sold out.
