SUMMARY:Introduction to the Jewish Bookshelf — Turning to Midrash
DESCRIPTION:You want to learn more about Judaism\, but where do you start? We are known as The People of the Book\, so it’s a great idea to get to know the framework of some of our foundational literature. \nIntroduction to the Jewish bookshelf presents texts that will be your entryway into conversations about creation in the Torah\, self-defense in rabbinic texts\, and revelation through the eyes of modern thinkers. \nThis class is for all levels of learners. We will meet in person on the following Mondays (location to be shared upon sign-up).  A minimum of eight participants is required. \nNov 17 – Turning to Midrash\nDec 1 – Turning to the Commentators\nDec 22 – The Mishnah as Oral Law\nJan 5\, 2026 – Turning to the Talmud\nJan 26 – The Legal Codes\nTwo Feb dates (TBD) – The Hasidic Masters and Modern Jewish Theologians\nMar 9 – Jewish Feminist Theologians\nMar 23 – Poetry and Creative Midrash\nApr 6 – makeup session \nAll classes will meet in person (or on Zoom in case of inclement weather). \nThis class is funded through a Hadar Community Group grant\, a program to foster engagement around Jewish study and practice. The class will be led by Temple Beth Israel member Scott A. Tepper. Scott has a BA in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University\, and a Master’s from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is honored to be approved as a Hadar Community Group Leader. \nTo sign up or if you have questions\, please contact Scott at stepper612@hotmail.com.

SUMMARY:Waltham Land Trust 26th annual meeting
DESCRIPTION:Every fall\, the Waltham Land Trust board of directors holds a public meeting where updates are provided on issues we’ve been tackling\, where one wonderful person is honored as our Inge Uhlir Environmentalist of the Year\, where returning and new board members are voted on\, and where a presentation on an important environmental subject is provided. This year we are thrilled to welcome professors from Brandeis who have been collecting oral histories from Walthamites about flooding in our city. \nSome may say that the highlight each year happens when the meeting ends and attendees gather to chat with each other over complimentary Toscanini’s ice cream! SUMMARY:In Conversation: Hannah Levy [Virtual Program]
DESCRIPTION:“I like to create objects that look like furniture\, or are furniture-like\, and have these anthropomorphic or bodily elements. Placing familiar forms into another context leads to a heightened awareness of ourselves and how we interact with the world.” \nArtist Hannah Levy merges organic and industrial materials to craft visceral hybrid sculptures that evoke human or animal forms\, fashion\, and medical apparatuses. In conversation with Henry and Lois Foster Director and Chief Curator Dr. Gannit Ankori\, Levy will explore how her practice complicates everyday objects into uncanny encounters\, inviting viewers to reexamine the relationship between the body and human-made environments.

SUMMARY:Mill Talk: What is industrial archeology? Its past and future.

It will cover its connections to allied history and practice fields\, like history of technology and historic preservation. Wermiel will conclude by presenting her ideas for what the field might focus on\, to have a purpose that can sustain it. \nSara E. Wermiel is an independent scholar\, historic preservation consultant\, and teacher. She currently teaches Preservation Planning in the Preservation Studies Program at Boston University. \nFree to the public\, but registration required. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. \n

SUMMARY:2nd Shift Concert: The Wolff Sisters
DESCRIPTION:Fronted by three sisters—Rebecca on acoustic guitar\, Kat on the keys\, Rachael on electric guitar\, and all three on vocals—Canton\, Massachusetts’ Wolff sisters were raised on steady diet of Bob Dylan\, The Band\, and Little Feat. Their music is honest yet genre-defying\, rooted in traditional storytelling that puts a decidedly New England spin on Americana music. \nSince they won “Americana Artist of the Year” at the 2020 Boston Music Awards\, the band’s electrifying live performances continue to garner recognition from their hometown of Boston and beyond. \nDoors open at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Mill Talk: Inside a Waltham pocket watch — How it works and why.
DESCRIPTION:Step inside the intricate world of fine watchmaking with Waltham’s own Chris Carey\, watchmaker and owner of Watertown Watch and Clock. In this live demonstration\, Chris will carefully disassemble a Waltham Model 1908 pocket watch\, revealing the artistry\, engineering\, and precision that made Waltham a world leader in timekeeping. \nAs he takes the watch apart piece by piece\, Chris will explain how each component functions\, what makes it essential\, and how Waltham’s innovations compared with those of earlier and later American\, Swiss\, and English timepieces. Through detailed visuals and hands-on examples\, attendees will gain a rare\, close-up look at the mechanical heart of a Waltham watch—and a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and ingenuity that powered the city’s historic watch industry. \nCarey was taught watch repair as a boy by his grandfather\, Pat Caruso\, a watchmaker at Waltham Watch Company. In 1993 he opened his own clock and watch repair shop\, Watertown Watch and Clock\, and now operates the shop with his wife\, Christine\, in Waltham. He has served as the secretary of the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI)\, he is the chairman of the board of the Massachusetts Watchmakers-Clockmakers Association\, and is past president of NAWCC New England Chapter 8. \nThis event is free\, but registration is required.
