SUMMARY:Mill Talk: And the Cabots talk only to God — Francis Cabot Lowell’s Cabot side
DESCRIPTION:Discover the story of the Cabot family\, whose legacy of wealth and influence shaped Massachusetts from the colonial era through the dawn of industry\, even inspiring the name of Francis Cabot Lowell. From their roots in Salem to their ventures in maritime commerce\, the Cabots built a network of enterprise that extended across New England and beyond. Their establishment of the Cabot Cotton Mill in Beverly — the first in America — marked a turning point in the region’s industrial future. This talk explores how the Cabots’ ambition and power helped define Boston’s so-called “codfish aristocracy” and left an enduring mark on the economic and social identity of Massachusetts. \nPresented by Krystina Yeager\, Education Manager\, Historic Beverly. \nFree to the pubic\, but registration required.

We are known as The People of the Book\, so it’s a great idea to get to know the framework of some of our foundational literature. \nIntroduction to the Jewish bookshelf presents texts that will be your entryway into conversations about creation in the Torah\, self-defense in rabbinic texts\, and revelation through the eyes of modern thinkers. \nThis class is for all levels of learners. We will meet in person on the following Mondays (location to be shared upon sign-up). A minimum of eight participants is required. \nDec 22 – The Mishnah as Oral Law\nJan 5\, 2026 – Turning to the Talmud\nJan 26 – The Legal Codes\nTwo Feb dates (TBD) – The Hasidic Masters and Modern Jewish Theologians\nMar 9 – Jewish Feminist Theologians\nMar 23 – Poetry and Creative Midrash\nApr 6 – makeup session \nAll classes will meet in person (or on Zoom in case of inclement weather). \nThis class is funded through a Hadar Community Group grant\, a program to foster engagement around Jewish study and practice. The class will be led by Temple Beth Israel member Scott A. Tepper. Scott has a BA in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University\, and a Master’s from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is honored to be approved as a Hadar Community Group Leader. \nTo sign up or if you have questions\, please contact Scott at stepper612@hotmail.com. \n

SUMMARY:New Year's Day hikes at Prospect Hill Park
DESCRIPTION:Start off the new year with a hike up Prospect Hill to an amazing view during one of the Waltham Land Trust’s most popular events! Please note that there are TWO different departure times and locations. \nFolks wanting a longer hike on various paths through the park should leave from Craft Food Hall at 200 5th Ave at 12:30 p.m. Those seeking a shorter trek either along the paved (not plowed) service road or via steep trails should depart at 1 p.m. from the park’s South Gate near 186 Prospect Hill Road. Park on roads in the neighborhood and be mindful of driveways and “No Parking” signs. Please carpool if possible. \nRegardless of where you leave from\, be prepared to walk on slippery paths that may have rocks\, roots\, and challenging terrain. Both groups will meet at the accessible vista point of Little Prospect for fabulous views of Waltham below and Boston in the distance. \nDress for the weather; cancelled in very cold temperatures or if precipitation is falling. Well-mannered\, leashed dogs are welcome.
