SUMMARY:More than Money: The world of coin collecting
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we continue our Social Series with “More than Money: The world of coin collecting” with Neil Musante\, a collector and numismatic researcher and author of two books that have become standard references on the subject\, with a third coming soon. \nThis talk will explore various aspects of collecting\, including some of the history leading to the coins of the present day. We will also discuss what makes some of them worth so much money and why two coins of the same denomination\, with the same date and mintmark\, can be so different in value from each other. It is essential to understand how coins are graded and how grade determines value. Most importantly\, there will be plenty of time for questions. \nSeats are limited. Sign up by calling 781-893-9020 or emailing with your name\, phone number\, and the number of participants. \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Waltham Cultural Council\, a local agency funded by Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:Who owns the news?
DESCRIPTION:The Brandeis Journalism Program presents Who Owns the News?\, an event featuring four former Washington Post leaders as they discuss one of the most urgent questions in journalism today: what happens when billionaire owners reshape the newsroom? \nThese veteran editors and journalists experienced firsthand the sweeping changes at one of America’s most storied newspapers\, from mass layoffs to shifts in editorial direction. This discussion examines the growing influence of billionaire owners on American newsrooms and what it means for the future of the free press. \nDean of the School of Social Sciences and Social Policy Sara Shostak provides opening remarks.

SUMMARY:The Gore Roll: A talk with Brenton Simons
DESCRIPTION:The Gore Roll of Arms\, the earliest known collection of heraldic arms in America\, was the work of Christopher Gore’s father\, John Gore (1718-1796). John Gore ran a paint shop in Boston and did fine decorative painting on coaches for the elite of Boston. The Gore Roll includes pen\, ink\, and watercolor arms for New England’s most prominent families\, including the Winthrops\, Saltonstalls\, Brattles\, and Winslows. Studied by many\, a copy was created by Isaac Child in 1847. The original remained in the possession of the Gore family until it was lost in 1865. Boston physician and heraldic scholar Dr. Harold Bowditch helped to secure and donate the original to the New England Historic Genealogical Society. This new publication brings together for the first time facsimiles of the original Gore Roll as well as the 1847 Child and 1926 Harold Bowditch copies. The publication is enriched by scholarly commentary\, including an introduction by D. Brenton Simons\, OBE. \nBrenton Simons is President Emeritus and Chief Stewardship Officer of the New England Historic Genealogical Society (AmericanAncestors.org). He is an author\, historian\, and genealogist. In this illustrated talk\, Brenton will tell the story of John Gore’s remarkable book\, its disappearance\, and rediscovery.

SUMMARY:2nd Shift Concert: Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light are a Boston-based string band making music that blends folk tradition with feminist storytelling\, poetic detail\, and just enough grit. At the center is Sumner’s songwriting—rooted in history\, myth\, and personal reckoning—carried by close harmonies\, upright bass\, acoustic guitar\, and fiddle. The trio features Kat Wallace on fiddle and vocals and Mike Siegel on upright bass and vocals\, whose playing brings both tension and tenderness to the sound. \nTheir sound is spare and intimate\, sometimes eerie\, sometimes sweet\, always intentional. They call it Femericana—sharp-edged Americana with a splash of feminine rage. \nVisit CRMII for more details and to order tickets.

SUMMARY:Waltham Forward neighborhood walk-a-thon (Return to the Bleachery)
DESCRIPTION:Waltham’s next regular municipal Election Day is Tuesday\, November 2\, 2027\, so from March 2026 to October 2027 I plan to walk to-and-thru every neighborhood in Waltham at least once as part of a 20 month Waltham Forward Neighborhood Walk-a-thon. A key part of this walk-a-thon is that it will be in person\, in real life\, and (mostly) offline! \nRSVP @ WalthamForward.com/Walk. \nFor this second event\, I am going to return to the Bleachery (the neighborhood on the east side of town\, north of the river but south of Main Street). We will start in the Shaw’s parking lot (the end by the foot bridge over the Charles river) between 10:45 and 11:00 a.m. before making our way toward Lowell Field Park (zig-zagging along the neighborhood streets south of the park). \nThe Purpose of the Walk \nAs we walk\, we will document potential infrastructure improvements\, obvious accessibility issues\, and likely safety concerns that ought to be addressed by the city. \nWe will also share a petition about the city website’s lack of ADA compliance\, and — more importantly — we will be on a listening tour to get to know our neighbors better.
