SUMMARY:'Hold Onto Me' East Coast premiere
DESCRIPTION:It’s summer\, and 11-year-old Iris is running wild through the streets with her older friend Danae when she learns her estranged father\, Aris (“Dogtooth” star Christos Passalis)\, is back in town for his own father’s funeral. Determined to know him\, Iris tracks him down to a dilapidated shipyard\, where he’s been keeping to himself. What begins as a stubborn attempt to reconnect slowly unfolds into a fragile bond. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. \n“Hold Onto Me” will screen as part of Belmont World Film’s 24th International Film Series\, “Thicker than water\,” exploring the ties that bind—and sometimes limit us—through an intimate and far-reaching collection of stories about families in all their complexity. Across cultures and continents\, these films ask what we inherit\, what we carry\, and what we owe one another. \nThe series unfolds over eight consecutive Mondays at the West Newton Cinema. After a two-week break\, the series returns in June with three additional remarkable films in recognition of World Refugee Awareness Month and Pride Month. \nFor complete details on the films in this series\, visit our web site. \n

SUMMARY:Mill Talk: The Legacy of 1812—How a little war shaped the transatlantic world
DESCRIPTION:In this engaging dialogue\, noted historians Don Hickey and Bob Allison explore the enduring legacy of the War of 1812—how a seemingly small conflict reshaped the relationships among the United States\, Britain\, and Canada. They’ll discuss the war’s political and economic reverberations in New England\, its impact on transatlantic trade and diplomacy\, and the ways it continues to influence North American identity and memory today. This topic has particular resonance here at the Charles River Museum\, the site of Francis Cabot Lowell’s Boston Manufacturing Company\, whose prosperity was only possible due to trade disruptions caused by the War of 1812. \nCo-sponsored by The Society of the War of 1812 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.\nPre-talk ceremony at 6:15. The Mill Talk itself will begin at 7 p.m. \nThe talk is free\, but seating is limited and registration is recommended.

SUMMARY:Blue Collar 101: Building trades & the path through apprenticeship
DESCRIPTION:What does it actually take to become a carpenter in the 21st century? What range of skills and specialties does the trade encompass\, and how does someone learn them? For the inaugural session of Blue Collar 101\, we’re bringing together voices from across the carpentry and building trades to answer those questions directly. Joining us will be members of Local 339 of the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters alongside a representative from the Massachusetts Division of Apprentice Standards (Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development). \nThis is a panel conversation for the general public and those interested in pathways to the trades and industrial work. Expect honest\, ground-level discussion about what the work looks like day to day\, how skills are acquired\, what the apprenticeship pipeline actually offers\, and what the public often gets wrong about the trades. \nThis will be the first of a series of events\, each spotlighting a different trade or type of industrial work\, including those that keep our electrical grid powered\, water flowing\, transit systems running on time\, and our modern world functioning around us. \nFree and open to the public but registration is recommended. Doors open at 6:30. \n

SUMMARY:Watch City Steampunk Festival
DESCRIPTION:Our FREE beloved festival\, despite being bound to four hours\, will still feature costumed performers\, musicians\, kids’ activities\, and a large collection of unique vendors peddling all things Steampunk. Centered on the beautiful and neatly kept Waltham Common\, attendees can listen to musical entertainment at multiple stages and stroll a network of footpaths through our open-air vendors’ market. Additionally\, you can experience exhibitions\, enjoy kids’ activities\, dine at various food trucks\, and view multiple performance spaces. Consult the event schedule on our website for a complete list of vendors\, performances and venues. \nWe also have an “Extra Hours” program of events happening in Waltham outside of the main festival hours. Currently there is a Blood Drive at the First Parish Church from 10 a.m.–3 p.m.\, the Waltham Pride Poetry Open Mic at the Waltham Museum from 4 p.m.–5 p.m.\, and a Make Your Own Golem event at Temple Beth Israel from 4:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m. Check our website for updates. \nNote that there will be NO rain date for this event. Please prepare for the weather accordingly! \nAs it does every year\, the festival is looking for volunteers to help make everything run smoothly. Local businesses are invited to sponsor the event. Information on all of these subjects can be found on the website www.watchcityfestival.com. \nThe Watch City Steampunk Festival is supported in part by a grant from the Waltham Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. Additional funding is provided by grants from the Waltham Tourism Council and the Jones Partnership Fund of First Parish in Waltham. \nDowntown Waltham Partnership’s goal is a downtown that is friendly\, diverse\, safe\, sustainable\, and thriving. To accomplish this\, DWP promotes the downtown as a vibrant cultural\, retail\, and entertainment destination reflecting the best of this diverse community.

SUMMARY:'Six Days In Spring' North American premiere
DESCRIPTION:A single mother—who is determined to give her twin boys a spring vacation after her original plans collapse—trespasses at her former in-laws’ luxury villa on the Riviera\, a place she once called home. Joined by the twins’ soccer coach\, secretly her boyfriend\, they cautiously savor six sun-drenched days. Directed by Joachim Lafosse (“The White Knights\,” BWF 2015)\, the film simmers with an ever-so-slight tension beneath its radiant setting. \nSpeaker: Haleigh Burgon\, a PhD candidate in French and Francophone Studies at Boston University. Her dissertation investigates how French and Francophone women writers and creators use representations of motherhood and memory to exercise resilience and articulate creative agency. Her research focuses particularly on Francophone literature and film from North Africa and the Caribbean\, with attention to gender\, postcolonial identity\, and narrative voice. \n“Six Days In Spring” will screen as part of Belmont World Film’s 24th International Film Series\, “Thicker than water\,” exploring the ties that bind—and sometimes limit us—through an intimate and far-reaching collection of stories about families in all their complexity.
