SUMMARY:'Porte Bagage' North American premiere
DESCRIPTION:A Dutch family of Moroccan descent embarks on a road trip to honor their father’s wish to return to Morocco and spend his final days at his ancestral home. Along the way\, old tensions resurface and loyalties are tested in a closely observed family dramedy about the emotional baggage we all carry as family members—that’s sometimes strapped to the roof of the car. \nSpeaker: Ian VanderMeulen\, a Fellow at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University. His research explores intersections among media\, sound\, the senses\, and Islamic thought and practice\, with a particular focus on the Maghrib. \n“Porte Bagage” will screen as part of Belmont World Film’s 24th International Film Series\, “Thicker than water\,” exploring the ties that bind—and sometimes limit us—through an intimate and far-reaching collection of stories about families in all their complexity. Across cultures and continents\, these films ask what we inherit\, what we carry\, and what we owe one another. \nThe series unfolds over eight consecutive Mondays at the West Newton Cinema. After a two-week break\, the series returns in June with three additional remarkable films in recognition of World Refugee Awareness Month and Pride Month. \nPreceded by a closing night reception at Blue Salt Restaurant\, featuring Moroccan cuisine (separate admission required). \nFor complete details on the films in this series\, visit our web site.

Her research focuses particularly on Francophone literature and film from North Africa and the Caribbean. \nMay 26 Speaker: Dr. Tiffany Bailey Rahman\, Research Fellow in the Africana Studies Program at Northeastern University. Her research interests include Black girlhood studies\, Black feminist studies\, Francophone studies\, contemporary film and literature\, and popular culture. \n“Six Days In Spring” will screen as part of Belmont World Film’s 24th International Film Series\, “Thicker than water\,” exploring the ties that bind—and sometimes limit us—through an intimate and far-reaching collection of stories about families in all their complexity. SUMMARY:'Six Days In Spring' North American premiere
DESCRIPTION:Note revisions to showing dates and speakers from previous announcement. \nA single mother—who is determined to give her twin boys a spring vacation after her original plans collapse—trespasses at her former in-laws’ luxury villa on the Riviera\, a place she once called home. Joined by the twins’ soccer coach\, secretly her boyfriend\, they cautiously savor six sun-drenched days. Directed by Joachim Lafosse (“The White Knights\,” BWF 2015)\, the film simmers with an ever-so-slight tension beneath its radiant setting. \nMay 21 Speaker: Haleigh Burgon\, a PhD candidate in French and Francophone Studies at Boston University. Her dissertation investigates how French and Francophone women writers and creators use representations of motherhood and memory.. \nFor complete details on the films in this series\, visit our web site.

SUMMARY:Mill Talk: AT&T's Idea Factory—How Bell Labs invented the technology of the future
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will explain the origins and unique capabilities of Bell Laboratories\, AT&T’s vaunted R&D organization. The work at the Labs led to many of the most revolutionary technologies of the 20th century\, including the transistor\, the laser\, digital communications\, the solar cell\, and communications satellites. \nBut why was Bell Labs so innovative? What went on inside this remarkable organization? How did its engineers and scientists organize and conduct their work—and how did it help the phone company and enable modern communications? \nThis 45-minute talk will explain the importance and function of Bell Labs; it will also tell the in-depth story of two of the Labs’ most formative technologies: the transistor and solar cell. A question-and-answer period will follow afterwards. Presented by Jon Gertner\, journalist and historian. \nThe talk is free\, but seating is limited and registration is required.
