SUMMARY:Film screening of 'Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack'
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rose Art Museum for a special screening of the acclaimed 2019 documentary “Queen of Hearts: Audrey Flack\,” an intimate and illuminating portrait of one of the most dynamic and uncompromising artists of the 20th century. The film offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from Flack as she reflects on her groundbreaking career\, her fierce independence\, and her role in shaping Photorealist painting on her own terms. \nBefore the screening\, guests are encouraged to take part in a docent-led tour of “Photorealism in Focus\,” which features two of Flack’s striking paintings: “Family Portrait (Farb Family Portrait)” (1969–1970) and “Shiva Blue” (1972–1973). The exhibition brings together pioneering and contemporary artists who explore the relationship between painting and photography\, inviting us to reconsider realism\, perception\, and the stories artists choose to tell. The tour offers valuable context for the film and a deeper understanding of Flack’s bold vision within the movement. \n2:30 p.m. — Docent tour of “Photorealism in Focus.” Rose Art Museum.\n4:00 p.m. — Film screening. SUMMARY:'In the Land of Arto' East Coast premiere
DESCRIPTION:In “In the Land of Arto” Camille Cottin (“Call My Agent\,” “House of Gucci”) stars as a wife who travels to Armenia to legalize her husband’s death\, only to learn that he lied about his military service\, that he fought in the war\, usurped his identity\, and that his former friends consider him a deserter. \nSpeaker: Diana Hayrapetyan\, Professor of Armenian at Harvard University and a PhD candidate at the Strassler Center for Holocaust Studies at Clark University. \n“In the Land of Arto” will screen as part of Belmont World Film’s 24th International Film Series\, “Thicker than water\,” exploring the ties that bind—and sometimes limit us—through an intimate and far-reaching collection of stories about families in all their complexity. Across cultures and continents\, these films ask what we inherit\, what we carry\, and what we owe one another. \nThe series unfolds over eight consecutive Mondays at the West Newton Cinema. After a two-week break\, the series returns in June with three additional remarkable films in recognition of World Refugee Awareness Month and Pride Month. \nFor complete details on the films in this series\, visit our web site.

SUMMARY:Virtual tour of Yinka Shonibare’s 'Sanctuary City'
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rose Art Museum for a virtual exploration of “Yinka Shonibare: Sanctuary\,” the U.S. debut of the British-Nigerian artist’s powerful and immersive installation “Sanctuary City” (2024). The installation consists of eighteen scaled-down replicas of historical and contemporary buildings from across the globe that have served as places of refuge for persecuted and vulnerable groups and individuals. Dr. Gannit Ankori\, Rose Director and Chief Curator\, in conversation with Pauline Forlenza\, Director and CEO of the American Federation of Arts\, will offer detailed analyses of the installation and explore its symbolic components. Ankori and Forlenza will also discuss how the artwork challenges us to confront our responsibilities to one another and to recognize every person’s basic need for shelter and a safe haven. While pointing to global history\, Shonibare’s installation makes an urgent call for action today and into the future. \nThis free virtual tour requires registration. The physical installation will remain on display at the Rose through January 3\, 2027. The Rose Art Museum is open Wednesday–Sunday; 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Admission is free\, but a ticketed reservation is recommended to guarantee entry.

SUMMARY:'Six Days In Spring' North American premiere
DESCRIPTION:A single mother—who is determined to give her twin boys a spring vacation after her original plans collapse—trespasses at her former in-laws’ luxury villa on the Riviera\, a place she once called home. Joined by the twins’ soccer coach\, secretly her boyfriend\, they cautiously savor six sun-drenched days. Directed by Joachim Lafosse (“The White Knights\,” BWF 2015)\, the film simmers with an ever-so-slight tension beneath its radiant setting. \nSpeaker: Haleigh Burgon\, a PhD candidate in French and Francophone Studies at Boston University. Her dissertation investigates how French and Francophone women writers and creators use representations of motherhood and memory to exercise resilience and articulate creative agency. Her research focuses particularly on Francophone literature and film from North Africa and the Caribbean\, with attention to gender\, postcolonial identity\, and narrative voice. \n“Six Days In Spring” will screen as part of Belmont World Film’s 24th International Film Series\, “Thicker than water\,” exploring the ties that bind—and sometimes limit us—through an intimate and far-reaching collection of stories about families in all their complexity.
