SUMMARY:Growing Up in the Gore Family: Class and conflict in Revolutionary Boston
DESCRIPTION:Christopher Gore grew up in a family on the verge of entering Boston’s genteel class. The Gores were active in the Revolutionary resistance\, organizing protests at Liberty Tree\, hosting spinning bees for Daughters of Liberty\, even being hurt in a riot before the Boston Massacre. But as that conflict heated up\, Christopher’s father chose to side with the royal government and left America in 1776. This talk explores the difficult choices that one family worked through. \nJ. L. Bell maintains the Boston 1775 website\, providing daily servings of history\, analysis\, and unabashed gossip about Revolutionary New England. Members of the Gore family play important roles in his book “The Road to Concord: How Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War.” \nJoin us for a lively and entertaining look at this fascinating piece of history followed by a walk through the Gores’ fabulous mansion. \nTickets are $10\, free to Gore Place members.

SUMMARY:Leonora Carrington: Dream Weaver
DESCRIPTION:Rose Art Museum\, Gerald S. and Sandra Fineberg Gallery \n“Leonora Carrington: Dream Weaver\,” the artist’s first-ever museum exhibition in New England\, brings together over 30 works of art\, some rarely seen\, that span over six decades of Carrington’s prolific career. Born into an Anglo-Irish family\, Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) strove to free herself from the gendered strictures imposed on her by society. Her rebellious spirit found refuge in art and literature\, leading her to join the surrealist movement in Europe and\, later\, immigrate to Mexico\, where she developed her visionary art.\nThe show explores Carrington’s creative and technical versatility\, working in a variety of mediums\, such as tempera\, gouache\, acrylic\, oil\, pencil\, pen\, and fiber while offering insight into her artistic process of conjuring fantastical worlds rich in magic and symbolism.

SUMMARY:Save Waltham Wildlife Community Forum
DESCRIPTION:In February 2023\, several WLT volunteer stewards formed Save Waltham Wildlife after a beloved local eagle died from eating a rat that had consumed rodenticide. \nSince then\, SWW has held meetings and lobbied officials to take steps to reduce the need for and use of poisons that also have deadly effects on raptors\, foxes\, and even outdoor pets. We’ve had successes (Big Belly trash receptacles and the city’s pledge to stop using poison on its properties)\, but there is more to be done. \nIn this online forum\, we’ll hear about SWWs victories\, learn about effective alternatives to second generation anti-coagulant rodenticides\, and help strategize on ways to expand SWW’s efforts moving forward. Waltham’s threatened wild creatures need us all to become informed and to take a stand. \nRegister for the Zoom link.
