SUMMARY:Juneteenth Waltham
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Juneteenth on the Waltham Common with the Waltham Boys & Girls Club! \nFree fun booths\, vendors\, musical performances\, and children’s bounce house and activities. \nRegister for free to skip the line. \nJuneteenth commemorates June 19\, 1865\, two and a half years after the emancipation proclamation and two months after the end of the Civil War\, when hundreds of thousands of enslaved men and women in Texas finally learned they had been freed. Juneteenth is an important milestone in American culture.

SUMMARY:Mill Talk: Work\, democracy & your paycheck
DESCRIPTION:What paystubs can tell us about American democracy and American capitalism. \nWhen’s the last time you checked your paystub? Most Americans don’t anymore. It can be hard to find them on HR websites. But Americans really should be checking their paystubs. Each of those deductions is a monument to fierce battles over what life should be like\, on and off the job. They are also a reminder\, every few weeks\, that so much of what it has meant to be a citizen has been tied to the work that Americans have done. \nSpeaker bio:\nElizabeth Tandy Shermer is a history professor at the University of Georgia\, where she directs the Applied History program. She is broadly interested in the history of work\, capitalism and democracy in twentieth-century America. \nFree to the public\, but registration is required.
