SUMMARY:Did 9/11 make today’s Middle East?
DESCRIPTION:The attacks on the United States set in motion policies and wars on Afghanistan and Iraq that profoundly reshaped the region\, and America’s relationship to it. Today\, as the U.S. remains embroiled in a war with Iran that has entangled much of the Middle East\, events of the past quarter-century seem more consequential than ever. \nIn the first Crown Center event dedicated to examining the long term consequences of 9/11 for the US and the region\, experts on Afghanistan\, Iran\, Iraq\, and U.S. foreign policy will ask: Did 9/11 make today’s Middle East? And how? \nNaghmeh Sohrabi\, the Charles (Corky) Goodman Professor of Middle East History and the director for research at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis\, will moderate\, and Gary Samore\, Crown Family Director and professor of the practice of politics at Brandeis University\, will deliver opening remarks. \nPanelists: \n\n\nSina Azodi is an assistant professor of Middle East Politics\, and the director of Middle East Studies Program at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. \n\n\n\n\nOsamah F. Khalil is a professor of history and chair of the International Relations Undergraduate Program at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. \n\n\n\n\nShamiran Mako is an associate professor of international relations and political science at the Pardee School of Global Studies and a faculty leave fellow with the Crown Center. \n\n\n\n\nMejgan Massoumi is an assistant professor of history at Carnegie Mellon University. \n\n\nRapaporte Treasure Hall and online. SUMMARY:Virtual tour of Yinka Shonibare’s 'Sanctuary City'
DESCRIPTION:Join the Rose Art Museum for a virtual exploration of “Yinka Shonibare: Sanctuary\,” the U.S. debut of the British-Nigerian artist’s powerful and immersive installation “Sanctuary City” (2024). The installation consists of eighteen scaled-down replicas of historical and contemporary buildings from across the globe that have served as places of refuge for persecuted and vulnerable groups and individuals. Dr. Gannit Ankori\, Rose Director and Chief Curator\, in conversation with Pauline Forlenza\, Director and CEO of the American Federation of Arts\, will offer detailed analyses of the installation and explore its symbolic components. Ankori and Forlenza will also discuss how the artwork challenges us to confront our responsibilities to one another and to recognize every person’s basic need for shelter and a safe haven. While pointing to global history\, Shonibare’s installation makes an urgent call for action today and into the future. \nThis free virtual tour requires registration. The physical installation will remain on display at the Rose through January 3\, 2027. The Rose Art Museum is open Wednesday–Sunday; 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Admission is free\, but a ticketed reservation is recommended to guarantee entry.

SUMMARY:Who owns the news?
DESCRIPTION:The Brandeis Journalism Program presents Who Owns the News?\, an event featuring four former Washington Post leaders as they discuss one of the most urgent questions in journalism today: what happens when billionaire owners reshape the newsroom? \nThese veteran editors and journalists experienced firsthand the sweeping changes at one of America’s most storied newspapers\, from mass layoffs to shifts in editorial direction. Together\, they’ll explore what billionaire ownership means for journalism’s independence\, credibility\, and future. \nKevin Merida\, former top editor of The Los Angeles Times\, former managing editor of The Washington Post\, and founding editor of ESPN’s The Undefeated\, joins Marty Baron\, former top editor of The Washington Post\, The Boston Globe\, and the Miami Herald; Janice Page\, former arts editor at The Washington Post\, The LA Times\, and The Boston Globe; and Kainaz Amaria\, former senior editor for visuals\, investigations at The Washington Post\, NPR\, and Vox. This discussion examines the growing influence of billionaire owners on American newsrooms and what it means for the future of the free press. \nDean of the School of Social Sciences and Social Policy Sara Shostak provides opening remarks.

SUMMARY:Danielle Mckinney: Beyond the Brushstroke
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special event with Danielle Mckinney\, the Rose Art Museum’s Perlmutter Artist-in-Residence\, in conjunction with her first solo museum exhibition “Danielle Mckinney: Tell Me More.” The artist\, in conversation with Rose director and chief curator Dr. Gannit Ankori\, will lead a tour of the show\, exploring her jewel-like paintings of Black women within intimate and beautiful interiors. This volume brings 50 of her paintings into conversation with journal prompts written by her mother\, educator Barbara Mckinney\, and includes space for the readers’ self-reflections. Books will be available for purchase at the Rose Art Museum\, offering a chance to bring home a unique extension of Mckinney’s art and vision. \nRegistration is recommended. \n
