SUMMARY:Did 9/11 make today’s Middle East?
DESCRIPTION:The attacks on the United States set in motion policies and wars on Afghanistan and Iraq that profoundly reshaped the region\, and America’s relationship to it. Today\, as the U.S. remains embroiled in a war with Iran that has entangled much of the Middle East\, events of the past quarter-century seem more consequential than ever. \nIn the first Crown Center event dedicated to examining the long term consequences of 9/11 for the US and the region\, experts on Afghanistan\, Iran\, Iraq\, and U.S. foreign policy will ask: Did 9/11 make today’s Middle East? And how? \nNaghmeh Sohrabi\, the Charles (Corky) Goodman Professor of Middle East History and the director for research at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis\, will moderate\, and Gary Samore\, Crown Family Director and professor of the practice of politics at Brandeis University\, will deliver opening remarks. \nPanelists: \n\n\nSina Azodi is an assistant professor of Middle East Politics\, and the director of Middle East Studies Program at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. \n\n\n\n\nOsamah F. Khalil is a professor of history and chair of the International Relations Undergraduate Program at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. \n\n\n\n\nShamiran Mako is an associate professor of international relations and political science at the Pardee School of Global Studies and a faculty leave fellow with the Crown Center. \n\n\n\n\nMejgan Massoumi is an assistant professor of history at Carnegie Mellon University. \n\n\nRapaporte Treasure Hall and online. In the second Crown Center event examining the long-term consequences of 9/11 for the U.S. and the region\, a panel will consider how that era changed journalism – and how it continues to shape the way the Middle East is reported on and understood today. \nNeil Swidey\, professor of the practice and director of the Journalism Program at Brandeis University\, will moderate the forum. An award-winning narrative journalist and bestselling author\, he is also editor at large of The Boston Globe Magazine. \nPanelists \n\n\nHannah Allam is a national security reporter at ProPublica and a former Baghdad and Cairo bureau chief for McClatchy. She was part of two Pulitzer Prize-winning teams at The Washington Post\, and her Middle East reporting has been recognized with George Polk and Overseas Press Club awards. \n\n\n\n\nC.J. Chivers is a writer at large for The New York Times Magazine and a longtime foreign correspondent.
