DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Halloween by taking to the trails in your costume (if it’s safe to do so) and help raise money for the Waltham Land Trust in a super fun\, family-friendly way! \nSince 2013\, the Waltham Land Trust has held the Western Greenway 5K walk and run benefit event where people of all ages traverse a 5K distance through the Western Greenway. Help preserve open space in Waltham while enjoying one of the properties maintained by WLT’s trail stewards for everyone to enjoy. \nThe 5K (3.1 mile) course goes through and around a variety of habitats in Beaver Brook North Reservation and Rock Meadow\, including cattail marshes\, forests\, vernal pools\, and open meadows. This year’s race route is new for 2025! \nBefore the main race kicks off\, kids ages 10 and under can join our 50-yard Monster Dash at 11:30 a.m.\, a quick\, fun sprint where every child gets a small treat for participating. Free for children who attend with an adult running the 5K\, $5 suggested donation otherwise. Perfect for little ghosts and goblins who want in on the action!

For 31 years Paul Rishell and Annie Raines have been hailed as one of the world’s best blues duos. From 2011 to 2022 they worked as visiting artists in the American Roots Music Program at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, teaching Country Blues techniques and history to new generations of aspiring musicians. They continue to perform American roots music and their own compositions at festivals\, concert halls\, and clubs all over the world.

DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: The cleanup is at capacity in Waltham (and actually along the entire length of the river)\, but folks can help with the Citywide Cleanup that day\, and with the Waltham Land Trust on other days throughout the year. \nThis is the 26th anniversary of this special event to help remove litter and invasive plants from along the banks of the Charles River. \nIndividuals should register here and come to Shaw’s (130 River Street) at 10 a.m. if you’d like to learn about and help with plants\, or at 10:30 if you only want to pick up litter. Groups should email Sonja and we’ll assign you a separate section away from the masses. Snacks\, supplies\, and instruction provided. Space is limited! \nRegistration required.

DESCRIPTION:Be part of the Great Backyard Bird Count! \nJoin us for a walk along the Charles River pathways in search of fancy waterfowl including hooded and common mergansers\, ring-necked\, goldeneye\, and ruddy ducks visiting from northern climes. Bring cameras and binoculars. Dogs are not allowed because they might scare away the birds. Dress for the weather and for standing around for long periods of time; postponed in very cold temperatures or if precipitation is falling. The bad weather date is February 22. \nRegistration is required and space is limited. The meeting spot will be emailed closer to the date to those who sign up. DESCRIPTION:Come stroll the paved paths along the boundary of the southern section of historic Beaver Brook Reservation\, the first park established by the state\, in 1893\, in part to save the endangered Waverley Oaks. The group that would become the nation’s first\, and Massachusetts’ largest\, preservation and conservation nonprofit\, The Trustees of Reservations\, was also founded to save these Oaks\, in 1891 by landscape architect Charles Eliot. DESCRIPTION:Every November\, the Board of Directors of the Waltham Land Trust holds an open meeting for WLT members and the general public where various topics we think would be of interest are discussed. This year\, we’ll mark our 25th anniversary by welcoming Mike Barnett\, professor of Science Education and Technology with Boston College currently working with local youth at the Charles River Museum of Industry’s Charles River Collaboratory. Dr. Barnett will share environmental and scientific research the students are conducting using tools and resources designed here in Waltham. We’ll also learn how to access the Mass Central Rail Trail\, honor our Environmentalist of the Year\, and provide updates on projects we’re tackling. Current\, dues-paying WLT members will vote on new and returning Directors for the WLT Board. Be sure you are up-to-date and join/renew if needed!
