SUMMARY:Brandeis cross-campus art tour
DESCRIPTION:Spend the afternoon exploring art across campus. Start at the Kniznick Gallery with a tour of “Who Will Draw Our History?” featuring powerful graphic narratives by women Holocaust survivors who began documenting their experiences just days after liberation. Then walk with us to the Rose Art Museum to explore “Photorealism in Focus” and “Fabricated Imaginaries: Crafting Art\,” where we’ll consider the role of artists as witnesses and storytellers. We’ll close with “Yinka Shonibare: Sanctuary\,” a striking installation of 18 architectural models that reflect on refuge\, vulnerability\, and our shared responsibility to one another. \nPlease register in advance. \n

SUMMARY:In Conversation: Judy Chicago [Virtual Program]
DESCRIPTION:The Rose Art Museum is honored to host Judy Chicago for a special conversation with Catherine Morris\, Senior Curator for the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Together\, they will explore Chicago’s groundbreaking “Birth Project” (1980–1985)\, a series that reimagines childbirth as a powerful\, sacred\, and creative act. Produced in collaboration with more than 150 needleworkers across the United States\, the project brought women’s collective labor and historically marginalized craft practices into the realm of monumental art. The discussion will focus in particular on “Birth Trinity” (1982–1984)\, a work from the series currently on view in “Fabricated Imaginaries: Crafting Art” at the Rose Art Museum. This conversation will also situate the “Birth Project” within the broader arc of Chicago’s career. \nThis program is free and open to all. Register for the event via Zoom Webinar.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: Hannah Levy [Virtual Program]
DESCRIPTION:“I like to create objects that look like furniture\, or are furniture-like\, and have these anthropomorphic or bodily elements. Placing familiar forms into another context leads to a heightened awareness of ourselves and how we interact with the world.” \nArtist Hannah Levy merges organic and industrial materials to craft visceral hybrid sculptures that evoke human or animal forms\, fashion\, and medical apparatuses. In conversation with Henry and Lois Foster Director and Chief Curator Dr. Gannit Ankori\, Levy will explore how her practice complicates everyday objects into uncanny encounters\, inviting viewers to reexamine the relationship between the body and human-made environments.

SUMMARY:Leonora Carrington: Dream Weaver
DESCRIPTION:Rose Art Museum\, Gerald S. and Sandra Fineberg Gallery \n“Leonora Carrington: Dream Weaver\,” the artist’s first-ever museum exhibition in New England\, brings together over 30 works of art\, some rarely seen\, that span over six decades of Carrington’s prolific career. Born into an Anglo-Irish family\, Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) strove to free herself from the gendered strictures imposed on her by society. Her rebellious spirit found refuge in art and literature\, leading her to join the surrealist movement in Europe and\, later\, immigrate to Mexico\, where she developed her visionary art.\nThe show explores Carrington’s creative and technical versatility\, working in a variety of mediums\, such as tempera\, gouache\, acrylic\, oil\, pencil\, pen\, and fiber while offering insight into her artistic process of conjuring fantastical worlds rich in magic and symbolism.
