The Waltham Fire Department will inspect fire hydrants throughout the city during the month of May.

Testing operations will be conducted weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Fire and Water departments will collaborate on inspections. Hydrant testing is completed by in-service fire companies during regular department business hours depending on weather) and around emergency calls, department training and business inspections. The department cannot schedule when a specific hydrant will be tested.

Fire companies will physically inspect hydrants for damage and  remove and lubricate all caps. They will also open and flush the hydrants as well as obtain pressure readings.

Waltham Fire Chief Andrew R. Mullin recommends that residents who use water for cooking, drinking or laundering during the month of May run their cold-water faucets until the water is free of rust. He advises residents to be on the lookout for fire companies in their neighborhoods, and he notes that wet pavement in the area of hydrants is a sign of hydrant testing. Anyone with concerns regarding rusty water after having run cold water for a period should call the Water Department at (781) 314-3855.
