The City Council last week unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra for its 40 years of service to the community.

Ward 7 Councilor Paul S. Katz introduced the resolution, praising the orchestra’s contributions to Waltham’s cultural life.

“Here in Waltham we’re lucky to have a strong arts community, and especially lucky to have the Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra,” Katz said.

WPO Board President David Salstein and longtime member Karen Walz accepted the honor.

Walz, who has been with the orchestra for 20 years, expressed gratitude for the council’s support.

“We are profoundly grateful for this honor,” Walz said. “For 40 years the Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra has proudly presented the finest classical orchestral performances.”

Salstein invited the public to a special anniversary concert on May 10.

Founded in 1985, the orchestra includes nearly 50 musicians and is known for its annual holiday pops concert and student concerto competition. Director Michael Korn leads the group’s programming.
