Dear Editor,

I would like to talk about the beautiful old trees of Waltham which are one of our beautiful features.

A very old maple tree in my yard, with copious shade and a beautiful canopy was suddenly pruned to the extreme one day about 5 years ago in front of my house. The word pruning should really not be used. It was an abortion. The tree was disfigured, leaving only an umbrella at the top. It was a shame. I spoke to the town and they said that one of the branches had hit a city truck so they came to prune it. They destroyed it. It looked so little like a tree after they were done. They could have just cut a few brances but they were there virtually all day destroying it.

Now it is dying.

We need to have professionals doing the work on these trees if it is necessary. The town crew does not have arborist skills.

Around the corner on School Street there is new construction and they cut down all the beautiful shady trees that adorned the sidewalk. Is this really what we want for Waltham?

I asked the new councilor for my district to address this. I don’t know if he will. But it needs to be addressed.

We are destroying the wildlife and the beauty of Waltham.
