The Waltham Hawkstars are practicing hard for the big showdown with the world-famous Harlem Wizards on Friday, Jan. 30, at the Kennedy Middle School Field House.

Proceeds will benefit Waltham youth, supporting educational activities, field trip transportation and teacher appreciation at Kennedy Middle School. Other Waltham PTOs that choose to participate also receive a share of the ticket sales.

A Harlem Wizards game is an interactive show packed with jaw-dropping dunks, crazy ball-handling and audience participation. It’s basketball, entertainment and community spirit all rolled into one event.

Chad Mazza, Waltham team coach and assistant superintendent of finance and operations, is hoping for a packed house to help lead his team to victory. “We’re ready to go. Win or lose, it’s going to be a fun time for everyone,” he said.

Kennedy Middle School eighth grader Martha Kembabazi will kick off the event by singing the National Anthem. Waltham middle school cheerleaders will perform on the sidelines to pump up the crowd. Members of Kennedy’s National Junior Honor Society will also help out at the game.

Rumor has it the Wizard’s camp is worried about the impressive Hawkstars lineup, which includes Kellianne Woods, Michaela Barber, Abril Lopez Soto, Amanda Grimes, Nevson Kanengoni, John Letteney, Kevin Kmiec, Rob Howes, Tedd Markos, Jennifer Ostayan, Aaron VanDeKoppel, Meredith Pettine, Adrienne Norris, John Rita and Paul Nichols.

The game begins at 7 p.m., doors open at 6 p.m.
