There must be better options for managing noise from events on the common

I object to the strict new rules for groups organizing events on Waltham Common.

The Mayor claims that use of the common is noisy, messy, and costs the city money. The Mayor’s office also cites noise complaints by neighbors.

Noise complaints could be addressed by a limit on loudspeakers after 4 hours. Citizens using the common is the very definition of the word “common”.  A policy imposing strict, capricious rules by edict is the antithesis of common property.
I have never attended an event on Waltham Common, but, for the 35 years I’ve lived here I’ve been proud to live in a lively, diverse, active community that celebrates myriad events. A decree by the city’s chief executive should not be the last word on the public’s use of the common it shares and has a right to use.

Please speak up (while you still can), send a message [email-mayor@city.waltham.ma.us].

  1. I support your objection. Lets collect ideas for other solutions to the problem. Yours is one. Regarding noise, it is also possible to measure decibel levels at various distances from noise sources and that could inform decisions about how loud to allow loud-speakers to be and for how long. A map (general, not specific) of confidential sources of the complaints might help guide that decision. Regarding cleaning up the mess, successful reapplications for permits could be contingent upon having adequately cleaned up after the last event. I bet most event organizers could organize a group of volunteers for this responsibility. I’m sure others can think of even more solutions. It may be that some combination of solutions would be acceptable to the surrounding community, at least on a trial basis. They could weigh in on them. We have to be respectful of their concerns as well.

  2. I agree with the letter writer regarding use of Waltham Common. As I understand it, all events on the Common are limited to 4 hours, and only one event will be allowed per day. Over the years I have enjoyed events that happen to go beyond 4 hours, and occur more than one per day. These activities make Waltham a cultural destination, help local businesses, and create a sense of community, not to mention exercise the right of assembly.
It seems to me the City Council which represents a diverse point of view should address this issue.
