Public safety report: Assault involving air rifle results in arrest

An assault involving an air rifle that took place on Felton Street has resulted in the arrest of a Waltham man.

On March 10 at 11:20 p.m., police were called to Felton Street where two men reported being assaulted with a rifle after an argument with the suspect. Through investigation, it was revealed that the weapon was an air rifle rather than a firearm. 

Follow-up interviews conducted on March 11 led police to identify a suspect, Gary De Leon, 38, of Waltham. He was arraigned on March 12 by Judge Sharon Lalli for two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and two counts of threat to commit crime.

A summary of other police and fire activity from March 4 to March 9 is as follows:

On March 4 at 12:14 p.m., fire crews responded to reports of a utility pole on fire at the intersection of Loretta Road and Smith Street. Upon arrival, crews discovered a small fire at the top of the pole. The road was blocked off and the power company was called to attend to the issue.

On March 6 at 3:01 p.m., police responded to the intersection of Trapelo Road and Woburn Street where a woman had driven through a vinyl fence. She said that she had been using the auto-pilot feature on her Tesla and was concerned that it wouldn’t detect a car turning in front of her. The woman decided to try to swerve to the right to avoid the car. She turned too hard and ended up driving through a vinyl fence at a nearby residence. The woman was cited for a marked lane violation.

On March 7 at 7:15 p.m., police responded to reports of a larceny at a barber shop on Main Street. A man had left the barber shop without paying for the services he received, which totaled $280. Police are investigating this incident.

On March 9 at 10:33 a.m., police responded to Calvary Street. Off-site security for the property informed officers that several times during the last three months, a man had been observed walking onto the property in the early morning hours to smoke or drink. Police are investigate the incidents.
