MassDOT lowers weight limit on Farwell Street Bridge after finding structural deficiencies

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation lowered the load rating of the Farwell Street Bridge. The change comes after recent inspections revealed structural deficiencies.

Truck travel across the bridge will be impacted the most, according to a brief from Waltham city engineer Robert Winn. There will be a 9-ton limit for five-axle vehicles on the bridge. Large delivery trucks, which may be over 9 tons depending on the weight of the load they are carrying, fit into this category.

For two- and three-axle vehicles such as cars, pickup trucks, motorcycles and school buses, there will be a 5-ton limit. Most personal vehicles will be under this weight limit. Owners of vehicles that are above the allotted limits can be fined and found liable for damage to the bridge. MassDOT and Waltham’s Engineering Department are available to answer any questions.
