The week ahead: City Council will reconvene on housing development, AI policy
This week, the City Council will hear a new affordable housing proposal introduced by Mayor Jeannette A. McCarthy focused on housing for veterans.
That’s just one of several topics introduced earlier this month that the council will take up during committee meetings on Monday. At its Committee of the Whole meeting, the full council will also discuss policies for how city employees can use AI tools.
Below is a chronological rundown of other city meetings scheduled for the week of Sept. 21–25.

Monday, 7 p.m. — City Council committees
Location: Council Chambers and Hoover Committee Room at Waltham City Hall, 610 Main St.
The Licenses and Franchises Committee will meet to consider requests for secondhand store licenses, outline a request for long-term plans for utilities work around the city and consider renaming the former high school at 617 Lexington St. The Finance Committee will consider a donation of workout equipment to the Fire Department and a grant for green energy projects in city buildings.
The Ordinances and Rules Committee will discuss special permits for a new drive-thru ATM and the conversion of the Crescent Suites Hotel into housing. It will also consider an ordinance change to bring MBTA zoning overlay districts in line with recently passed affordable housing reforms.
Tuesday, 7 p.m. — Community Preservation Commission
Location: Over Zoom. (Passcode: Waltham)
Waltham’s CPC implements the requirements of the state Community Preservation Act, including by reviewing applications to use CPA funding for historic, recreational or community housing construction, renovation or preservation projects. The board includes representatives of other administrative bodies from around the city.
This week, it will consider funding applications for exterior renovations at Gore Place and the Community Day Center, as well as a request for additional funding to restore the steeple of the First Parish Church.
Wednesday, 6 p.m. — Ambulance Committee
Location: Council Chambers at Waltham City Hall, 610 Main St.
The Ambulance Committee will meet this week to discuss renewing the city’s ambulance services contract.
Wednesday, 7 p.m. — License Commission
Location: Basement meeting room at the Clark Government Center, 119 School St.
The License Commission grants and reviews permits for serving food and alcohol for entertainment and for some types of gaming machines across the city.
Its agenda will be posted Monday on the Licensing Department page of the city’s website.
Thursday, 7 p.m. — Conservation Commission
Location: Over Zoom. An agenda and link for the meeting will be provided on the commission’s page on the city website at least 48 hours in advance.
The Conservation Commission reviews construction on or around wetlands and other environmentally protected areas in Waltham to ensure it complies with Department of Environmental Protection standards.
This week, among other topics of discussion, the commission will review a plan to demolish and reconstruct a building at 234 Calvary St.
