Buckle up for two upcoming antique car shows in Waltham

It’ll be bumper-to-bumper car shows in August as the city gets ready to host hundreds of vehicles along parts of Moody Street on August 16 and Trapelo Road on August 24.
In previous years there was a wide variety of autos at both events, from a 1929 Cadillac and a vintage prisoner transport vehicle from the mid-1950s to a Batmobile and Ghostbusters’ Ecto-1 (the Ectomobile).
“It’s a good way to bring the community together,” said Ward 8 Councilor Cathyann Harris, the organizer of the Aug. 16, Moody Street show. “It’s just a feel-good day.”
The downtown stretch will be closed to traffic from Maple Street to Pine Street from 12 to 4:30 p.m., creating a pedestrian walkway from the usually busy thoroughfare. Harris is hoping for good weather since there’s no rain date for the fourth-annual city event.
If the sunshine cooperates, attendees can visit local eateries and shops while checking out the cars.
Although the Waltham Lions Club’s 10th-annual car show takes place soon after Moody Street, “I don’t think one will diminish the other,” Harris said. “People are drawn to each show for different reasons.”
Longtime Lions member Charlie Egirous, who is organizing the group’s Trapelo Road event (and registering cars for Moody Street), agreed with Harris.
“Everyone in the automotive community … [is] very personable, social,” he said. “It’s a friendly event.”
The Lions’ share

The Lions’ volunteer-run show will take place on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Reservoir Place on Trapelo Road, with a rain date of Sept. 14. There is room for almost three times as many cars at the Lions’ event compared with the Moody Street event’s capacity to park 120 vehicles. There also will be food and drink available for purchase at the show.
Egirous, a lifelong Waltham resident, will be displaying his own classic car in the show — a gold convertible 1969 Pontiac GTO that he’s owned since he was in college.
Funds for both events are raised through car registration fees. For the Moody Street show, the $10 fee goes to pay for the show itself. For the Lions, the $20-registration fee goes to several charitable causes as well as to five $2,500 scholarships for Waltham High seniors.
The Lions also give out “best of” trophies in 12 categories, including for car from each era, truck, street rod, foreign, and best of show.
“There’s a wide variety of vehicles, we expect,” said Egirous.
When asked how he felt about the event turning a decade old, he said, “I’m happy about it and proud.”
