MBTA installs electronic signs on Carter Street

The MBTA recently installed new digital signs at the two bus shelters on Carter Street in Waltham to give real-time updates on bus service to riders.

Carter Street is one of the busiest multi-modal transformation hubs in the MBTA system, providing Commuter Rail Service as well as numerous bus routes (Routes 61, 70, 553, 554, 556, and 558). The MBTA expects the new signs will improve the rider experience for all who use buses to commute in and out of Waltham.

The signs provide real-time information bus arrivals and MBTA service announcements.

The signs have a paper-like display similar to e-readers, so they’re readable even on a sunny day. They’ve also been tested to withstand frigid Boston winters, the MBTA said. The signs are offered through an MBTA partnership with the company E Ink, which enables the delivery of information to stops that don’t have access to the electricity or the fiber network needed for the T’s traditional electronic signs.
