Waltham-based nonprofit is fundraising for medical clinic in Nigeria

The Waltham nonprofit From This Rock is hosting a fundraising dinner at Sacred Heart Parish’s Parish Hall, 311 River St., on Saturday, Jan. 24, for its newest project: establishing a medical clinic in Nkerefi, a city in Enugu State, Nigeria.

Guests are invited to enjoy an evening of African entertainment, authentic cuisine, a cash bar and the chance to win raffle items. Following the 4 p.m. Mass, the From This Rock board will serve up Afrobeats food and Nigerian treats from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Tickets are $30 and can be purchased after Sunday Masses and online

From This Rock was founded in 2024 after the Rev. Gabriel Chukwu returned to Sacred Heart as priest-in-residence from a visit to his home country of Nigeria. Its focus is on humanitarian aid for communities in need, such as access to clean water, medical facilities, and supplies for proper healthcare.

Waltham has supported its funding efforts in the past. From This Rock this past April completed its first goal of building a freshwater well in Nkerefi, thanks in large part to the generosity of the Waltham community. Today a solar-powered well provides potable water, renewable energy and a gathering place for many villages and towns.

This month’s fundraising event will kick-start plans for the medical clinic in Nkerefi, working in collaboration with existing clinicians and mission volunteers.
