Senior Center this week: Tech tutoring and New England Patriots’ history

Waltham’s Council on Aging operates out of the William F. Stanley Senior Center at 488 Main St. The spacious, well-equipped center offers guidance on senior issues as well as rich programs for exercise, music, classes and socializing. Tech tutoring sessions begin this week, Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. in Spanish, 1 p.m. in English. Sept. 23–Dec. 4. These sessions are for you if you have a laptop, tablet or smart phone. Learn how to set up e-mail, organize photos or files, navigate the Internet, organize your desktop or apps on your phone, set up contacts, modify security and privacy settings, fill out online forms, connect with family and friends, and more. Waltham Connections and Bentley University Service Learning Program offers tech assistance to members of the senior center in English or Español. Each session is 25 minutes. You can attend as many weeks as you would like, if space is available. Free. Register for appointment.

New England Patriots History, Friday, Nov. 13, 1 p.m. Bob Hyldburg, official Patriots historian and author, will share a lively one-hour look at the team’s history, from their AFL beginnings to becoming one of the NFL’s most successful franchises. His presentation features memorable players, coaches, games, traditions, and behind-the-scenes stories, and plenty of time for questions and fan memories. Whether you followed the early AFL days, the Brady-Belichick era, or simply love Patriots football, join us for a fun trip down memory lane! Light refreshments will be served. Register. The cost is $3 per person due at sign up.

The COA provides information on legal services, home care, assistance with nursing homes and assisted living facilities, financial assistance, housing options, mental health and substance abuse.

• Volunteers are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels. Home-delivered meals are available Monday- Friday. Subsidized by Springwell or private pay.
• Senior parking permits are available for $5 per year. Show your driver’s license at the COA registration desk.
• Taxi vouchers are available for purchase, six books per month.
• Help with transportation. Medical appointment transportation is available in Waltham only. Grocery shopping routes are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, call for availability. Limited transportation to the Senior Center is available upon request with advance notice.

Planning ahead

Holy Guacamole! Friday, Oct. 2, 1 p.m. Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month and enjoy lively Mexican music, a bilingual retelling of The Legend of the Corn, and a hands-on guacamole-making activity using fresh, traditional ingredients. It’s a festive blend of culture, story, and flavor. Come hungry and leave happy! Registration begins Sept. 15. The cost is $2 per person due at sign up.

The Boston Saxophone Quartet. Friday, Oct. 9, 1:30 p.m. The Boston Saxophone Quartet will bring their signature blend of rich harmonies, smooth jazz and timeless classics. The quartet features four talented saxophonists who play everything from lively swing tunes to tunes to beautiful melodic pieces. Free. Please register. 

Multi-language programs

• English as a second language classes. Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Classes given by an experienced ESL teacher. Improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while learning practical English for everyday life. Free but please register.
• Hora del Café. Wednesdays at 10:30–11:30 a.m.  Spanish-speaking coffee hour. 
• Ugandan Golden Seniors. Fridays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Lunch program.
