Court Report: Newton Street crash lands Haverhill man in court

A Haverhill man faces multiple charges at Waltham District Court following his alleged involvement in a crash on Newton Street.

The case dates back to March 30, when a Waltham Police Department officer responded to a report of a car crash on Newton Street at around 11:15 p.m.

According to police records, the officer observed a white Jeep sideways on Newton Street. The Jeep had extensive damage to its front section and there was additional damage to a nearby utility pole.

Police ran the vehicle’s information and found that it was registered to a Haverhill resident.

During the investigation, a resident reported to police seeing a man hopping a fence on nearby Chemistry Street. An officer also learned that a ridesharing service car had been waiting at the intersection of Pine and Elm streets to give someone named Charles a ride to an address in Haverhill.

Police then dispatched a K-9 unit, which located Charles Medeiros, 21, of 3 Verndale St., Haverhill, hiding under a porch at a property on Gorham Street.

Police detained Medeiros and brought him to the police station for booking.

While he was being booked, officers reportedly found a half-empty bottle of vodka and keys to a Jeep.

Police charged Medeiros with operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of property damage.

During his initial arraignment on May 1, Medeiros pleaded not guilty to those charges and was released on the condition that he continue to show up to court. His arraignment is set to continue on June 17.
