ICE Boston arrests man wanted for manslaughter in Brazil

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it apprehended in Waltham a 29-year-old man who had been convicted of manslaughter in his native country of Brazil.

According to a press release issued Wednesday, ICE apprehended the man while driving a motor vehicle on Jan. 25 in Waltham.

ICE did not disclose the man’s name or where he was residing in the United States, as is typical for arrests. Nor did ICE explain why it issued the press release nearly two months after the arrest.

A reporter from The Waltham Times emailed and called ICE’s Boston office as well as the Brazilian Consulate General with questions about the apprehension but did not receive a response.

A Waltham Police Department spokesperson said local officials had no information.

ICE said in its press release that a Brazilian court had convicted the man on Dec. 11, 2018, of manslaughter while driving a motor vehicle and sentenced him to serve a prison term of four years, eight months and 21 days. ICE said that the man had failed to appear for his prison sentence following the manslaughter conviction.

The U.S. Border Patrol arrested the Brazilian fugitive on Nov. 22, 2018, after he illegally entered the United States near Hidalgo, Texas. Immigration officials issued the fugitive an order of expedited removal and released him on his own recognizance at that time.

The press release from ICE did not explain why he was arrested in the United States one month prior to his conviction in Brazil.

The man remains in ICE custody following his Jan. 25, 2025, apprehension.
