The rat problem demands leadership

The recent presentation by the Health Department regarding Waltham’s rodent problem highlights a critical issue that extends beyond public health—it strikes at the very heart of our city’s reputation, which as Councilor Katz has pointed out in the past, needs repair. As long as our streets are associated with rat activity, we risk being seen as a community that has lost its grip on basic municipal standards.

While I welcome and support Director Feeley’s call for collaboration (I have called for this in previous comments), it is disappointing to hear city leaders framing a substantial part of the issues as a “resident problem”. Citizens cannot be blamed for the outcome of systemic issues that only the government has the power to fix. True leadership requires various departments—from Public Works to the Health Department—to stop “tiptoeing” and work together to implement the significant changes Councilor LaCava rightly pointed out are missing.

City leadership needs to take charge and give us all a call to action. We residents will pull together if we are given the right tools and a clear roadmap. If the city invests in a comprehensive public awareness campaign and provides the necessary infrastructure—such as the recommended city-approved garbage bins and more frequent trash pickups in the hardest hit areas—the community will surely step up as we all want the issue solved, not endlessly debated.

The city government must lead the way with a unified strategy and clear communication. Only then can we expect residents to follow suit and restore the clean, professional reputation Waltham deserves.

Sincerely,
