Charles River Museum marks 250th birthday of industrialist Francis Cabot Lowell
Monday marked the 250th birthday of Francis Cabot Lowell, recognized as one of the most transformative figures in American industrial history and whose contributions made the City of Waltham a prominent part of the Industrial Revolution.
To mark the occasion, the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation honored Lowell with a birthday party at its 154 Moody St. building, the National Historic Landmark site of the Boston Manufacturing Co., which Lowell co-founded in 1813.

Born on April 7, 1775, Lowell revolutionized textile production by developing the Waltham-Lowell System, a technique that combined mechanized spinning and weaving under one roof.
His development of the Waltham-Lowell System marked the beginning of the American Industrial Revolution at scale. His innovations not only revolutionized manufacturing processes but set the stage for the rapid economic and technological advancements that followed, according to the Charles River Museum.
Lowell died at the age of 42 in 1817, three years after he built his first mill along the Charles River in Waltham.
The museum honored the milestone of Lowell’s birth with opportunities to reflect on his legacy and impact on industrialization, with museum staff, board members and supporters attending the fete alongside city leaders and community members. Members of the Cabot and Lowell families also attended.
The museum is currently offering guided tours and curriculum exploring Lowell’s enduring influence in Waltham and Greater Boston.
“In celebrating Francis Cabot Lowell’s 250th birthday, we honor his contributions to American industry and innovation,” said Steve Guerriero, director of education at the Charles River Museum. “His pioneering efforts not only reshaped the economy of our new Republic but also laid the groundwork for the industrial and technological advancements that continue to shape our world today.”
