On Monday evening, June 2, around 5:30 p.m., Waltham Police responded to Moody Street near Railroad Avenue after a report of a male discharging a firearm near the commuter rail tracks.

Officers arrived and located two individuals at the scene. The officers determined that the individuals were known to each other and the incident was isolated. No injuries were reported.

A witness stated the suspect may have thrown the firearm into the Charles River. Multiple agencies including Massachusetts State Police, MBTA Transit Police and Watertown Police K9 units responded.

The State Police underwater recovery team was called in to search the river. As of 2 a.m. this morning, there has been no report of a firearm being recovered.

Train service was temporarily suspended while crews searched the area. Multiple shell casings were found on the tracks.

A 17-year-old juvenile was taken into custody and is facing several charges, including assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and firearm-related offenses.

Police said this does not appear to be a random act. The investigation remains ongoing.
