Steampunk Festival returns to Waltham Common May 9

Brass goggles, parasols, waistcoats and pocket watches will once again take over Waltham Common when the Watch City Steampunk Festival returns on Saturday, May 9, from noon to 4 p.m. Because of the four-hour limit imposed earlier this year on events on the common, Steampunk activities will spill over into a variety of “Extra Hours Events.”
Now a signature spring event for the city, the festival blends Victorian-era style with imaginative retro-futurism, drawing performing artists, costumed attendees, vendors and spectators into a celebration of creativity, history and community.
The free, family-friendly event is organized by the Downtown Waltham Partnership and reflects the city’s industrial roots as the birthplace of the American watch industry. Waltham earned the nickname “Watch City” in the 19th century, when the Waltham Watch Company pioneered mass production techniques that helped transform manufacturing nationwide.
That legacy provides a fitting backdrop for steampunk, a genre that reimagines the technology and fashion of the steam-powered 1800s with a science fiction twist. Festivalgoers are encouraged to dress the part, often incorporating gears, corsets, top hats and mechanical accessories into elaborate costumes.
This year’s festival will feature live music, street performers, themed entertainers and interactive activities spread across the Common. Local artisans and vendors are expected to offer handmade goods, vintage-inspired crafts and steampunk-themed merchandise, while food vendors will serve a range of options throughout the afternoon.
Extra hours events include a Red Cross blood drive at First Parish Church, a Waltham Pride poetry open mic at the Waltham Museum, a “Make Your Own Golem” party at Temple Beth Israel, an open mic at Christ Church and a “Pub & Chanty Sing” at In a Pickle restaurant.
Organizers say the event attracts visitors from across the region while maintaining its focus on local culture and accessibility.
More information, including a schedule of performers and vendor details, is available at the Watch City Festival website.
