A newly renovated space at the Waltham Boys & Girls Club is set to welcome middle school students this summer following a volunteer-led transformation backed by the AbbVie Foundation and national nonprofit Heart of America.

About 40 AbbVie volunteers worked alongside club staff to refresh a high-use multipurpose room ahead of summer programming, creating what organizers describe as a more flexible and inviting environment for learning and social connection.

The project, completed as part of the AbbVie Foundation’s global Week of Possibilities initiative, included new flooring, fresh paint and updated furnishings such as tables, sofas and collaborative seating. The effort also added storage systems and design upgrades, along with roughly 200 educational resource packs for students.

Club officials said the redesigned space will serve between 20 and 60 middle schoolers daily, supporting academic enrichment, esports programming and group activities throughout the summer and school year.

“This transformation couldn’t come at a better time,” said Erica Young, executive director of the Waltham Boys & Girls Club.

The effort builds on ongoing investment in Waltham by Heart of America and the AbbVie Foundation. Since 2025, the partnership has renovated two local spaces, reached more than 800 students and distributed books, school supplies and learning materials.

AbbVie, which recently acquired Waltham-based biotech firm Apogee Therapeutics, has expanded its local footprint while continuing to support community initiatives through its foundation.

Heart of America President and CEO Jill Hardy Heath said the goal is to ensure students have access to welcoming environments year-round.

“Learning doesn’t stop when the school year ends,” Heath said.

The Waltham Boys & Girls Club serves hundreds of youth annually through academic, athletic and enrichment programs.
