Senior Center this week: Paint a scarf, hear a story and learn to live joyfully

Waltham’s Council on Aging operates out of the William F. Stanley Senior Center at 488 Main St. The spacious, well-equipped center offers abundant programs for exercise, music, classes and socializing. Check out the center’s newsletter for a full listing. Call 781-314-3499 with questions and to register for programs.

Daily programs include billiards and bocce games (drop-in).

Every Tuesday 9:30-11:30 a.m. Bridge lessons. $10 per lesson. Bridge game at 1 p.m. All are welcome.

Every Tuesday at 10 a.m. English as a second language classes given by an experienced ESL teacher. Improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while learning practical English for everyday life. Free but please register.

Tuesday, July 14, 1 p.m.. Scarf art with Karen. Bring your inner Picasso to life in this silk scarf painting workshop! Create a one-of-a-kind wearable work of art while learning simple techniques on silk. All supplies and instructions are provided. Just wear clothes to get messy in and come ready to play with color. Free but please register by calling 781-314-3499.

Wednesday, July 15, 11 a.m. My grandma’s legacy, with Karina Liendo. This is the beginning of Liendo’s “Like Water for Chocolate” saga, when you will learn how Abuela Angela meets the love of her life, conquers his heart with food and leaves a legacy to her oldest granddaughter. Free but please register by calling 781-314-3499.

Friday, July 17, 1-2 p.m. The art of living joyfully. A program that is as entertaining, funny and uplifting as it is educational. Robert Rivest shares light-hearted stories of what led him to develop The Rivest Method of Joyful Living. He includes an interactive segment on daily practices that can help us feel healthier, happier and more joyful in our senior years. Free but please register by calling 781-314-3499.

Priscilla Elliott is a volunteer with The Waltham Times and liaison to the Council on Aging. A respiratory therapist, Priscilla worked nights at the Waltham Hospital.  Later, she helped smokers learn how to become smoke-free, leading to healthier lives. Priscilla’s volunteer experiences include reading to blind people through the Massachusetts Association for the Blind, fostering cats for The Cat Connection and being a healthy control in Parkinson’s Disease clinical trials with The Michael J. Fox Foundation. She counts baseball, classical music and following politics among her hobbies.
