Mayor McCarthy to run for re-election in 2027
Waltham Mayor Jeannette A. McCarthy intends to seek re-election in 2027, setting the stage for another mayoral campaign after more than two decades in office.
McCarthy was first elected mayor in 2003. She was most recently re-elected in 2023, when she defeated former City Councilor Jonathan Paz.
McCarthy plans to make a formal statement in September. Her announcement will officially launch what is expected to be a closely watched municipal election, as candidates consider whether to challenge Waltham’s longtime mayor.

She’s done a fine job in my opinion. I hope she stays in harness for another term.
Mayor Mccarthy without doubt has been the “best” mayor in walthma history, in my opinion. Her lenghty long time dedication to the “love of her life” has endeared the voters of waltham for her endurance, fairness, honesty and an administration of efficiency. Our tax rate is one of the lowest in the Commonwealth due to her excellent legal and management skillx, and her strenght and continued leadership is without doubt has benefitted all the citizens of the community. May God bless her and give her the health and strength to continue her strong leadership.
Please make it stop. The level of selfishness is disgusting. It’s time to hang it up and let someone else have a chance. There’s so much potential in this city that is being wasted by those afraid of change. It’s time to move on people…
I hope someone who is credible and experienced runs against Mayor McCarthy. 23 years in office is far too long, and missteps over the past year (like forcing our major festivals to compress to a four hour window) have made it clear that it is time for her to retire from this role.
