Spotted lanternflies seen in Waltham

Waltham residents on Reddit reported seeing the spotted lanternfly in city boundaries. Grizzlyadams33 posted a photo and wrote, “First time seeing a Lanternfly in Waltham. Looks like they’re here folks, extinguish on sight.” The creature was seen at Hobbs Brook.
Another Redditor, whosthere5 wrote about seeing the insects “all over the Charles river walk. See them daily, step on them when I can,” and shinylikedirt commented “I just saw my first one the other day walking past Brandeis and gave it a good smush… I’ve been training for this moment!!”
State agricultural officials confirmed the presence of the spotted lanternfly in Waltham in 2025. An invasive planthopper native to Asia, it feeds on a wide range of plants including grapevines, maples and hop vines. The insect poses significant risks to grape and wine producers as well as other agricultural commodities.
The insects do not bite or sting, but they gather in large swarms that can disrupt outdoor life and coat surfaces with a sticky substance known as honeydew.

Residents are encouraged to report suspected sightings of the insect to MDAR through its online reporting portal.
