Senior Center this week: Tech tutoring, saxophone quartet, Medicare

Waltham’s Council on Aging operates out of the William F. Stanley Senior Center at 488 Main St. The spacious, well-equipped center offers abundant programs for exercise, music, classes and socializing. Tech tutoring sessions continue this week, Wednesday, Oct. 7, 9:30 a.m. in Spanish, 1 p.m. in English. Held through Dec. 4. These sessions are for you if you have a laptop, tablet or smartphone. Learn how to set up email, organize photos or files, navigate the internet, organize your desktop or apps on your phone, set up contacts, modify security and privacy settings, fill out online forms, connect with family and friends and more. Waltham Connections and Bentley University Service Learning Program offer tech assistance to senior center members in English or Español. Each session is 25 minutes. You can attend as many weeks as you would like, if space is available. Free. Register for appointment.

Drop-in flu and COVID vaccine clinic, Thursday, Oct. 8, 1 p.m.

Boston Saxophone Quartet, Friday, Oct. 9, 1:30 p.m. The Boston Saxophone Quartet will bring their signature blend of rich harmonies, smooth jazz and timeless classics. The quartet features four talented saxophonists who play everything from lively swing tunes to beautiful melodic pieces. Free. Please register.

Planning ahead

What’s new in Medicare for 2027, Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1 p.m. Each year, those on Medicare can review their Part D drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans during annual open enrollment, which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Plans and Medicare rules change every year. Come hear about what’s new in 2027 and how any changes may impact you. Free. Please register. 

Encore Casino trip, Tuesday, Oct. 20. Try your luck with 2,800-plus slot machines. Enjoy 166 table games. It all adds up to an exciting, memorable experience. The tour operated by Bloom Tours includes free slot play and deluxe motorcoach transportation. Motorcoach will leave from the Sacred Heart Church parking lot at 9:15 a.m. The cost is $39 per person, due upon registration. Casino Time: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Casino package is $20. You must have a current Massachusetts drivers license to participate in the rewards program. Please Register.

Priscilla Elliott is a volunteer with The Waltham Times and liaison to the Council on Aging. A respiratory therapist, Priscilla worked nights at the Waltham Hospital.  Later, she helped smokers learn how to become smoke-free, leading to healthier lives. Priscilla’s volunteer experiences include reading to blind people through the Massachusetts Association for the Blind, fostering cats for The Cat Connection and being a healthy control in Parkinson’s Disease clinical trials with The Michael J. Fox Foundation. She counts baseball, classical music and following politics among her hobbies.
