Off-duty police officer stops crypto scam

An off-duty Waltham police officer stopped a cryptocurrency scam, according to a Facebook post from the department.

While stopped at a gas station on Aug. 14, officer Dan Collins noticed a man with a large amount of cash at a bitcoin machine inside the station’s convenience store.

The potential victim had been speaking on the phone with an individual who fraudulently claimed they were from Apple Tech Support, and that the man needed to deposit money to fix a virus on his computer.

This scenario looked similar to other scam cases he had been involved in, so Collins stopped the transaction, preventing the man from losing $12,000.
