Hawks for the Holidays fundraiser
Hawks for the Holidays is in full swing at Waltham High School, and students are hoping for a strong finish. On Dec. 22, they’ll gather for an assembly to show off a massive display of gifts for more than 300 children. The assembly will include performances by the choral and band students, as well as others.
Now in its 42nd year, the WHS-led program is a long-running community service that helps provide gifts for local children and families in need during the holiday season. WHS’s student council and its National Honor Society spearhead the project and get others involved. Students pool money as a class, and representatives from each class purchase gifts with the money raised.
The idea came about in 1984 after a fire had devastated a Waltham family, prompting a drive to buy presents for their five children. Two WHS teachers brought the idea to the students, who loved it. They took it over and turned it into a cherished Waltham holiday tradition. More than 10,000 presents have been delivered over the years.
“The generosity of the students and Waltham community has been fantastic,” said Derek Vandegrift, the program coordinator and WPS Director of History and Social Studies. “It shows a real caring and concern for children less fortunate at this time of year. Students are learning and working together, as well as creating a positive memory for these Waltham kids.”
There’s still time to donate to the program. Use the Waltham High PTO Venmo account.
